Metagross Supreme Victors SV 7 – Card of the Day

Metagross Supreme Victors SV 7 Pokemon CardMetagross from Supreme Victors has one of the most punishing Poké-Bodies in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. “Gravitation” makes all Pokémon on the field have 20 less HP, which in theory puts most things in range for a 1HKO. You want to be careful when placing Metagross onto the field because if it’s played at the wrong time, your opponent can easily take control of the game.

The trick is to evolve into Metagross when you know your Pokémon can get a key Knock Out, without being Knocked Out the following turn. Also be sure to not play it down when one of your Pokémon is at 20 HP.

Its attack “Geo Impact” is very costly, but it works well with Miasma Valley and it can do some decent spread damage. Since Metagross works best sitting on the bench, I feel that you won’t need to use its attack that often. As far as partners go, I like this card with Kingdra from Legends Awakened because it makes its spread damage much more powerful.

The strategy is similar to other Kingdra lists except you play Metagross on the field when you can get a key Knock Out or two with “Dragon Pump.” The next turn you may want to use Super Scoop Up on Metagross and then play it down again when you can get another set of KOs.

Warp Point helps a lot at switching out your high retreating Claydol against Luxray GL LV.X and Blaziken FB LV.X locks, as well as setup “Dragon Pump.” Remember to attach Unown G’s to your Claydol and Metagross in order to prevent “Luring Flame.”

Kingdra Legends Awakened LA 7 Pokemon CardSo there is my current decklist. I tried it out a couple of games and it does a good job at setting up. Right now, it has some difficulty versus Luxray GL LV.X decks because of Lightning weakness and TGI Power Spray. I still feel like there are more partners for Metagross that I haven’t come across yet. Finally, it may be too early to start thinking about the next set Pokémon Platinum: Arceus, but I really think this card will get a boost with the release of Focus Sash and Gengar LV.X.

So commentators, what do you feel about Metagross from Supreme Victors? Should it be used as an attacker or as a Tech/Support line like I use in this Kingdra list? What are some other partners that can be used with this unique card?

I was never very faithful or optimistic about kingdra until spring Battle Roads when my pall Alex B aka Chuck showed me his battle roads kingdra list, which would later be slightly modified into his nationals list, which would be slightly modified to his worlds list. Kingdra does a consistent amount of damage over and over again at an unbelievable speed. I contend that nothing can donk as quickly as kingdra when played correctly. But with all of these 80+ hp sp basics, it’s only natural to find ways to cut the hp down in order to dragon pump for the KO. I tried a list along the exact same lines as this one- with metagross kingdra and friends, because I was a huge fan of metagross in theory when I saw it in the japanese scans. You need just a crobat drop to KO baltoy on the bench with dragon pump and baltoy’s new measly 30 hp. The idea sounds really enticing, but in the end, I think metagross+ kingdra is a tech in a deck that can’t function with techs. It’s really hard to get both kingdra and metagross out turn 1, which is ideal. The beldum is another bad start in a deck already not known for its fantastic starts (horsea or crobat are the only ideal ones I can think of). I think metagross has potential, but not in this true speed deck of all speed decks. Kingdra works best depleting HP through pluspowers and crobats+poketurns. In a slightly slower deck like gengar+crobats, I think he might have some real potential, and yes, Gengar X will help out with that, too. Speaking of which, when was focus sash released in advent of arceus? I never saw it =/. One card that will make KINGDRA a beast though is the newly announced expert belt. Doing one for 80 and 20 to the bench with 150 hp is just massive. . .

I like Metagross as a lot as a tech, whether it be in Kingdra, Gengar, or any decent spread deck. Not more than a 1/1 should probably be used, as you want to play it the turn you get multiple KO’s. You should be wary of your own pokemon, though, as it can easily be a double-edged sword if you’re not careful.

Something like Wailord with an expert belt and a Metagross on the bench might be interesting, though, ha

I have field experience with a Kingdra using only 1-0-1 Metagross, and I’ll definitely agree that 2-1-2 is the way to go if you want to run it; otherwise, you’ll never get ‘Gross out. In the half dozen most recent games that I’ve played, I have not once seen it hit the board, so it’s either all or nothing.

It may be “cute” to attack with Metagross, but it’s definitely not worth your time. I’d just run maybe 2-3 Multis to give you the Spinning Attack option vs Luxray.

one thing i like to do against luxray decks is when they flash impact and set 30 on azelf or uxie, you can easily get a ko with dragon pump. Rampardos might be a good partner for metagross too because it makes that damage so more powerful.

BTW Focus sash=expert belt lol, i am going to edit that!!! Thanks J-Wittz for pointing that out.

This would not be for a Kingdra deck, but another deck running Metagross SV. I think Electode G might be a decent support Pokemon. You could keep Electrode G in your hand with 1 SP or Multi Energy. On the turn you evolve Metagross, you could then Bench Electrode, bring him up to the active spot (preferably your active would have a free retreat), drop the SP or Multi Energy and do “Reckless Bomb”. That’s a one turn hit for 40 damage across your opponent’s entire Bench and the Defender. Of course, you do lose Electrode. But, properly played, I think you might be able to get 2 or 3, maybe 4 KOs in the mid to late game stretch.

dave h that’s a fantastic idea with abamosnow sf or gengar maybe… nice idea. BTW i think devoluter is decent but idk if it will be good when half the format is SP pokemon.

Devoluter might be a decent option in this, it could probably get you an easy prize.

I actually really like the idea of pairing Metagross with Kingdra. At first I thought about pairing this Metagross with the new Honchkrow. Pull something out of the discard, and snipe it with Honch Lv.X. But Kingdra is so much more reliable

I’ve done the opposite thinking on this. Wanted to run Kingdra and thought that Metagross could be nice with it to grab some more easy prizes and to help against Nidoqueen RR. Not sure it’s the best Kingdra version possible, but it does work fairly well.
Two suggestions though if I may. Beldum LA#84 is the play IMO, the other two have a 2 retreat cost and it’s a huge liability. The second suggestion is probably more arguable, but I feel it’s better to cut the SSUs in this version and to replace them with 4 Pokéturns (along with a second crobat). With the -20 SSU becomes a lot less interesting on Kingdra whereas Poketurns can really help grabbing some easy prizes, especially early game.

Quaziko had originally tested a Kingdra/Metagross list w/ Crobats and Poke Turn but I heard that it didn’t perform well. I am not sure what the problem was with it, but it seemed like an awesome idea on paper.

Also. Even though 130 HP is quite hard to get through, 110 is still a bit difficult, and Kingdra has great swarming abilities
