Pokémon Card Strategy

We have a special celebrity guest reporter today who gives some quick insight on Pokémon cards…

(It’s the dude from Ghostbusters, I personally interviewed him. :P)

On a more serious note, I know everybody out there has been duking it out at Battle Roads this weekend, so be sure to send in some well written tournament reports or even just thoughts and analysis on what people are playing!

This last Saturday I was at the BR, and the winner was using a Rhyperior Lv.x (LA)/ Delcatty (PL). It’s a good combo, it lets you do up to 250 damage each turn with no energy attached, but it will damage the delcatty’s by 20 each turn. The Rhyperior Lv.x uses hard crush, and discards the top 5 cards of the deck, and it does 50x the amount of energy discarded. The benched Delcatty’s then use their poke power to put 6 energy back on top of the deck from the discard pile. Takes time to set up and get the energy into the discard, but it is effective after that, as long as you can support the delcatty’s.

I’ve played against Rhyperior Lv.x (LA)/ Delcatty (PL) at our local league. It’s brutal once it gets set up. With Rare Candy it can get going pretty fast. With 170hp, even teching in a Water Pokemon to hit for x2 weakness is problematic. One idea is to use Octillery PL’s “Water Vein” that has the potential for a OHKO. Each heads rolled for a Water Energy in the top five cards of your deck would be 100 damage. Of course, with flips there is no certainty.

Maybe using Warp Points or a Pokemon that can pull a Delcatty off the Bench would a be better solution.

Our BR (Kingston, ON) is also on Oct. 4.
