Alright, this is my report from our 2nd BR of the season.
I decided to play an SP Toolbox consisting of Honchkrow G, Luxray GL, and Garchomp C, along with some other techs including Drifblim FB.
Before I get to my report I would like to give you a slight overview of the tournament, mostly what placed where.
We had a total of 58 people at this battle road, and the following decks placed:
- Masters-
- 1st Place:Gyrados w/Luxray GL and Toxicroak G
- 2nd Place:Beedrill w/Luxray GL
- 3rd Place:Flygon w/1 Flygon SW
- 4th Place:AmphyTric w/Nidoqueen and Metagross SV
- Seniors:
- 1st Place:Tangrowth/Sceptile
- 2nd Place:Gengar/Manectric/Giratina
- 3rd Place:Rhyperior/Delcatty
- 4th Place:Kingdra w/Exploud tech
- Junior:
- 1st Place:Magmortar SW/Blaziken FB
- 2nd Place:Palkia G/Luxray GL
Those were the deck that top cut, now onto my report.
This round essentially had everything going for me and everything against him. He opens with a Horsea and I open with a Garchomp C. My hand consists of SP Radar, Power Spray, Energy Gain, Garchomp C LV.X and 2 energy. He goes first and plays down a Crobat G to “Flash Bite” my Garchomp C. He then attaches a W Energy and decides to “Reverse Thrust”, 10 more to Garchomp C and he switches into his Crobat G. I draw and the card is a Cyrus’s Conspiracy, I couldn’t of asked for a better card. I use the Cyrus to get an Energy Gain, D Energy, and another Cyrus’s Conspiracy.
After that I attach a P Energy to Garchomp C and attach one of my two Energy Gain’s to Garchomp C. Afterward I use 1 SP Radar putting back the Electric energy in my hand to get a Honchkrow G. I attach the 2nd Energy Gain to Honchkrow G. After that I realize that I should probably get a 3rd Pokémon SP out, so I decide to use my 2nd SP Radar to get a Luxray GL. I use “Claw Swipe” for 30 and he goes. Next turn he evolves into Seadra, retreats and uses “Aqua Pump” to do another 30 damage to Garchomp C.
Next turn I draw, level up into Garchomp C LV.X, using “Healing Breath” to remove all the damage from my Garchomp C. I then use a Cryus’s Conspiracy to get a P Energy, SP Radar, and another Cyrus’s Conspiracy. I then attach the P Energy to Garchomp C LV.X and use “Dragon Rush” to KO his Seadra. He draws, and gets an Uxie. He attempts to set up for 7, but I Power Spray it, he passes. Essentially the rest of the game he tries to draw but I spray it, and I lock in 2 crucial Chatot G’s.
1-0
Round 2 vs. Magnezone/Electivire w/Blissey tech
Many a time I have played against this deck and once again, he is able to start with the Jirachi RR he put in there. I go first, opening with a Luxray GL. I draw, attach an Electric Energy and pass. His turn. He draws, uses Roseanne’s Research to get a Mangemite and a Baltoy. He then uses a Rare Candy in his hand to evolve his Baltoy into Claydol. He uses “Cosmic Power” and then uses “Detour” to get the effect of Roseanne’s Research, getting an Electabuzz and a M Energy.
I once again draw into a Cyrus’s Conspiracy thankfully, because the only supporters in my hand were 2 Volkner’s Philosophy which would not have helped me right now. I use the Cyrus’s Conspiracy to get a SP Radar, a D Energy, and another Cyrus’s Conspiracy. I use the SP Radar putting back one of my Volker’s to get a Luxray GL LV.X. I use “Bright Look” to bring up the Magnemite he attached to and used “Flash Impact” to get a KO.
I’m not really sure how the rest goes. All I remember is he tries to put me into situations where he has a big Magnezone up front, but using “Flash Bite”, “Target Attack”, “Dragon Rush”, and “Bright Look” constantly, I am able to pick off his bench to win the game.
2-0
Round 3 vs. Ampharos/Manectric/Nidoqueen/Metagross SV
I had to play another friend. He showed me the deck before the tournament and I thought it was a great idea. While Dialga G would have slowed him down, there was 1 deck playing Dialga G in the Master’s today, and with Nidoqueen in the deck, Machamp didn’t give it as much of a problem.
I do remember this game being close, with him hitting 2 crucial “Giga Volt” flips to either Paralyze or KO my Garchomp C LV.X when he did not have a Manectric out. Manectric also hurt me, cause a lot of this deck is bench damage. He was also able to get damage on fresh Luxray’s that I would PokéTurn to that I could not use “Bright Look”.
2-1
Round 4 vs. Floatzel GL/Bronzong SF
She opened with a Bronzor, and I opened with a Honchkrow G. She is able to get off several “Strange Spin” attacks to do 60 and confuse, but in the end, I am able to 1HKO her Floatzel’s with Luxray and KO Bronzong’s with a “Flash Bite” and “Dragon Rush”
3-1
Round 5 vs. Gyrados w/Luxray GL & Toxicroak G
Another close match. I am able to get a quick prize with a first turn “Target Attack” Knock Out on his Baltoy, but then he uses a Pokémon Rescue to get it back, and then plays a Broken Time-Space and evolves into Claydol. We trade off turn after turn, essentially getting KOs every turn (he ends up 2 Prizes ahead of me at one point) When I thought I was fine after using “Dragon Rush” to KO his Claydol, he attaches a Cyclone Energy, forcing me to bring up either a Chatot G, Lucario GL, or Honchkrow G.
3-2
Well, I didn’t cut, and it was really sad because I had a lot of fun playing this deck, and I think I could have done well with it.

Nice report. Last match was too bad… I have a Garchomp/Luxray list too. Mind if we trade list?

Sure. I’ll get it to you sometime later today

Nice report, man! I know it feels rotten not getting to top cut but you have to look at it this way– none of your losses were you being brutally overpowered– the deck has a solid matchup on a lot of things and a lot of 50-50 matchups. Keep practicing with the deck until you know all its ins and outs and you’ll be a pretty big force to recon with!

Reading this BR report, plus others on the site, certainly confirms that there is a wide variety of decks being played that are capable of getting into the top 4.

haha! i am also coming up with a deck similar to this…but i have some questions about BR tournies…i know that you aren’t supposed to use any pokemon from any of the sets before diamond and pearl but does that go same with trainer cards? energies? and special energy cards?
Power Swing
No cards from any of the sets before diamond and pearl can be used
only reprints potion, switch, etc.
Ivan Garcia
oh but what do you mean potion, switch, etc? what other cards? so you have to look at the little symbol now and any cards with symbols from sets before diamond and pearl you can’t use? even energies?
take a trip down to this site: http://pokegym.net/tower/
Any card posted in that middle section is currently legal in a tournament. Any trainer posted here that has been released in the past can still be played. Also, all basic energy are always legal.
Most special energy cards legal now that were previously printed include:
-warp energy
-cyclone energy
-special dark energy
-special metal energy
Most reprinted trainer/supporter cards include:
– pluspower
– switch
– warp point
– potion
– underground expedition
– most different kinds of fossils
– pokeball
– great ball
– super scoop up
– energy search
– etc.
I know how you feel, it’s a shame that you can’t play a lot of your really old cards, but it’s done to ensure the most powerful cards don’t remain in the format forever and it encourages the purchase of new cards and more balanced gameplay. Pokemon isn’t one of the cheapest hobbies, but it is one of the most fun!
Power Swing
if we were allowed to use old energies I would still be playing GG
it’s a shame they cut EX sets :/ sigh

Nice report!
I would like to see the list though, I think I might make that a requirement for future tournament reports. It would make it the article more interesting to read (easier to follow along with your match descriptions) plus you could get feedback from everyone. :)
What does everyone think about that? I know some people do not like to share lists, but I feel it would exponentially add to the quality of the article.
I’ve seen this kind of thing argued both ways, and I respect each side. There are two kinds of great reporters: A and B.
Guy A doesn’t share his deck list. It’s not because he thinks he holds in his hands the most powerful deck in the format and he doesn’t want his secret to be unlocked, though. No, this kind of guy still writes a fantastic article describing the decks he faced, key moves he made, and the different expectations/experiences he encountered. He’s a big fan of deckbuilding as a personal art in Pokemon, and therefore wants to continue this art by encouraging the development of individual lists and the discovery of a personal feel for a deck. I argue this because not only is it tiring seeing people scourge pokegym and the likes for a list they can copy card for card and seeing several clone decks in the same tournament, but I’ve found that you WILL DO WORSE with a deck you haven’t tested and perfected yourself. The truest form of testing is building a deck from scratch and determining what works for you and what doesn’t. Tourneywriter A can still leave an informative article by highlighting a strategy in the beginning of their report.
Guy B is a community guy. He puts bigtime trust into the pokemon online fanbase and encourages posting lists in order to exchange feedback. He does this for growth of decks and ideas directly over the internet, and also because he’s proud of the list he’s made. Othertimes he’s done poorly and shares his list to ask where he went wrong. He’s a large believer in the concept that playing skill is a much larger factor in who wins a match than which decklist is played. His articles can be very helpful to newcomers because they can understand card for card what is in the deck why– or they can ask questions to determine this as well.
I like both players and understand both of their motives. I’m more of a player type A, myself. I feel like it’s too tempting to just copy paste a deck to a tournament. I’ve even won a couple this same way, but other times I’ve just totally bombed it because I hadn’t practiced enough. A perfect example is my very first tournament last year, a City Championships. I made my own rogue blissey darkrai weaville deck that ran smoothly, absorbed a lot of hits, healed, and did a decent amount of damage. I really loved that deck. However, when I read online that Dusknoir and Gengar variants were winning most CC’s, I immediately copy pasted an exact list and took it to the tourney. Needless to say, I wasn’t as experienced and went 1 and 3 before dropping. The worst part is, after the tournament I played with my BWD deck against others and won every match I played! It was a huge bummer.
So, I think that a decklist shouldn’t be required, but a strategy section before the report should be. Also, to those who read the articles, don’t be afraid to test your own lists, too! Right now, I’m working with uses for Regirock while trying very hard not to look online for Silvestro’s list. It’s fun that way! : D
Adam Capriola
You make some good points J-dub. What are other peoples thoughts?
Ivan Garcia
i think it could be the choice of the writer/reporter cause there are people that “steal” the deck and post on another site hidden by the original creator and call it there own…but for reports like these i would say that it be better cause sometimes you don’t know what they were talking about…but i thibk it’s the writers choice if he wants to reveal his deck
Richard Lee
Well, I think it’s sensible to share deck lists. Although for some people who are very… egoistic I might say… They will feel that their list only belongs to himself/herself, maybe at the most they will share among their team members if they belong to a playing group. I mean so what if you got beaten up by your own deck? I would have humbly accepted that fact because in most mirror matches, even if the decks are off by a few cards, it will put the player’s playing skills, experience and decision making process to the test.
Joshua Hall
I noticed that you said in your first game against Kingdra you decided to claw swipe when your Garchomp C already had 2 damage counters on it. That seems like a really risky move, considering there’s a great chance he could’ve rare candied or BTS’d into a Kingdra to KO it. I don’t know why you would even consider hitting a crobat G for 30 anyway, since Luxray or Garchomp OHKO’s it even if it’s undamaged. Just sayin’.
Anyway, there are a lot of tough matches out there, and the ones you did lose weren’t blow-outs. Besides, this is only Battle Roads :)
Very nice report! Was Drifblim FB helpful at all?

Drifblim tilts me so much, because he continues to look at me and tell me that he has a purpose, but I can’t find it. His weakness and resistance are both pretty good, weak to nothing popular and resistant to flygon (extremely popular) and can potentially have 120 hp late game (great for a basic) WHY can I not fit him in anything?
I blame the fact he needs a second attack.
Maybe if his first attack cost PC and did 30 (all the game text) giving a crobat drop and snipe to a pixie… then a second attack for late game? Or maybe a damage porter? haha no.
But seriously, if you play Drifblim any more let me know how it runs, I’m very intrigued by this card, but like I said it always gets cut for other things.
Power Swing
It seems to look at me to
i mean the only cards it has weakness to are honchkrow g and t-tar but neither are popular

I have tested Drifblim out in my Honchkrow/Luxray deck and it works out great at one shoting pixes and uxie lv.x ormachamp lv.x with help from crobat. Other than that it really doesn’t help a whole lot but it could be decent i guews

Yeah, it seems like it helps out the most against Flychamp, which SP may need a little help with, but I just don’t know if Drifblim could ever tilt it in your favor without using a Bronzong G, and having to drop a E-Gain, stuff I really don’t want to have dedicated to Drifblim…
Adam Capriola
Yeah I think just the fact that it needs 3 energies is the problem, it’s quite an investment for a somewhat limited attack.

Late game against flychamp i have 2 prizes left to draw my opponent has 1. I galactic switch an energy over to drifblim, energy gain, psychic energy, retreat luxray and pull up drifblim my opponent has an active flygon fully powerd and a machamp lv.x on his bench. I tjen one shot it with the help of crobat g. My opponent then power swings for 100 but pump up and resistencen prevents the ko and next turn i then ohko a benched uxie to win
Another thing that lets this card down is retreat
It can be pulled up for a lock or an easy ko by to many cards in this format

oops, well I just completely jacked my friend. Anyway back to the card. Like i said earlier it would be a lot better if its attack only toook PC but it doesn’t. that is just my opinion though

Little late here but in my opinion deck lists should never be shared except to playtesting partners. The problem is that you can tell so much about somebody’s playstyle from their list. If you consistently see that anothers players lists are extremely teched out you can probably assume that their lists arent going to run as well as the standard version of the decks they are using. Knowing this when you play them you could be more willing to make a risk play by killing something early instead of focusing on your setup because you know they will have a hard time coming back from a kill. It happens all the time, mainly with my playtesting partners. I know what their lists generally look like so I can assume what is in their current list, even if I havent seen it before. Another example is switching power. I know some people who go extremely heavy on the warp points so they can always have one when they need one. Knowing this I am forced to always play like they have one which means they just lost a huge surprise factor.

Whats up, This can be a great summation, I located your blog checking google for any similar subject and discovered this. I couldnt discover too a lot other tips and data on this posting, so it was great to find this one. I am going to most likely be returning to contemplate various other articles or blog posts which you have written another time.
