The Platinum Octillery is a card that has intrigued me since it came out. Its first attack “Water Vein” is a free attack with potential to do 0-250 damage. Yes quite a range, but since it comes down to coin flips the odds are a solid 125 damage if you can flip five water energy from the top of you deck. That’s quite the big hitter if you have some luck with showing energy in the top five cards.
The question then is, “how do you get 5 W Energy consistently on top of the deck?” This is a question I’ve tried to answer for a while and I tried things like discarding energy and using Delcatty Platinum to put them back on top, but with limited effectiveness. I then realized the key was to thin the deck and recycle your Pokémon back to your hand for continued use.
The pairing that made the most sense was Floatzel GL, Jirachi from RR, and of course Octillery. Basically the idea is to start with at least Jirachi and a supporter and start using that supporter twice with “Detour” to set up and pull out everything that is not an energy from the deck (Call Energy and your supporters can help recover from bad non-Jirachi starts). Jirachi has the added benefit of being a search card when it is Knocked Out by damage with its “Final Wish” power.
This is great for searching out your LV.X, leveling up, then retreating to attack with Octillery’s “Water Vein”. Octillery with “Water Vein” is your main attacker and Floatzel GL LV.X is to recycle your Octillery/Remoraid and energies back to your hand with “Water Rescue”. It can also serve as a back-up hitter or can recycle supporters with the basics free attack “Incite”. Also, its attacks can either hit for 50 for two energies with “Giant Wave” or possibly much more with “Energy Cyclone”. “Energy Cyclone” also has great synergy with this deck as it puts the energy back in the deck, exactly where you want them. Ideally with this deck you want to set-up ASAP then KO 6 straight Pokémon for the win.
The trainers and supporters I use are as follows: 4 Bebe’s Search for searching out whatever Pokémon I need and putting energy back in the deck. Roseanne’s Research to pull basics out quickly (This will be replaced with the new Pokémon Collector that searches out three basics when it releases). Cynthia’s Guidance to search out any card you need from the top seven cards, and finally 3 Pokémon Rescue to get back any crucial Pokémon Knocked Out before I have Floatzel Gl LV.X in play or if Floatzel Gl LV.X is Knocked Out.
The energy is really where you can experiment and tech in cards. You need W Energy for Floatzel Gl’s requirements, but for its “Energy Cyclone” or Octillery’s “Water Vein” any energy will work. This allows you to max out on Call Energy for consistency and Warp and Cyclone Energy for your switching needs without taking energy spaces away for trainers.
The biggest counters to this deck are just plain bad luck with flips or some sort of card that makes you shuffle your hand back into your deck as this destroys your strategy. This is definitely a fun deck and may one day with the right support or list be a very viable play. Give it a try some time at league if you are at all intrigued. It’s cheap to build as the 10-15 dollar Floatzel GL LV.X costs more that the rest of the cards combined.
Here’s my latest Decklist:
Pokémon: 13 2 Floatzel GL RR 1 Floatzel GL LV.X RR (would put it two if I had them and drop an energy) 4 Jirachi RR 3 Remoraid PL 3 Octillery PL |
T/S/S: 15 4 Bebe’s Search 4 Roseanne’s Research (will be Pokémon Collector when the release) 4 Cynthia’s Guidance 3 Pokémon Rescue |
Energy: 32 16 W 4 Call 4 Warp 4 Cyclone |
Nice article, but one thing is nagging me, you always say: “How to get 5 Water energies…”, but Octillery does damage for each energy, it doesn’t matter if it’s water or not.
Very true, I’m just use to it being water energy since that was all I ran in the deck previously. I originally created this deck thinking there would be a rotation after worlds, thus no special energies from this list. Octillery’s “Water Vein” and Floatzel GL Lv. X’s Energy Cyclone both use any energy so that is why you can use special energies to take care of your search and switching needs. Thanks Soul guess that needed clarification.
Btw, you habe 28 energies in there, not 32…
Soul I need to hire you as my proof reader. Should be 32 energy like the heading says you could add in any other special you like maybe one for a healing effect or could just add in 4 more water or even 4 rainbow or multi if you would ever consider using Jirachi’s swift attack.
Soul- I appreciate the attention to detail and that you read the article.
Everyone else that’s reading this any constructive criticism on the list would be great, I’m always looking for ways to make it more competitive.
Let me know what you think, thanks!
Have you ever tried running the deck with Staraptor FB Lv. X? His power is pretty useful for pulling all your supporters out quickly. Another card I’ve played in this is Sableye SF, again helps to use supporters early, and there is room for four special dark energy to try for donks.

I tried sableye before jirachi, but just feel jirachi thins the deck better. It’s more luck dependent because you need to start with some supporters or draw them, but it works better. An example is you start with sableye imposter for a roseanne’s and pull two basics out. That’s three non-energy cards out of the deck. Now lets say you start with a Jirachi and that roseanne’s pull two basics, detour two more, that’s 4 non-energy cards out plus a fifth in the roseanne’s. Plus when Jirachi gets knocked out you get whatever you want. It also has free retreat, that can come in handy when you are using special energies to remove special conditions, but want to retreat back to main attacker.
This looks like a really fun deck, thanks for sharing it!
I would run 1 Luxury Ball (no reason not to) and take the Cynthia’s Guidance out. I’m not a big fan of the card.
I know there is some Dialga (I think from Platinum) that has a power that lets you put 3 Energy on top of your deck…have you considered using him? I think he would be good in this.
Also, Cynthia’s Feeling combos well with Jirachi. That’s another card to think about, but it does put a ton of cards in you hand which might be bad.
I’m just curious, how does this do midgame? How are you with draw an everything? Have you considered Claydol?
What is wrong with Cynthia’s Guidance? I have found that the card is actually pretty good in situations where you need to pull a trainer or a supporter; there aren’t many cards that do that besides Starpator Lv.X,etc. I know the first thing your gonna say, it only lets you look at the top seven: so what! If you cant find a card to help you win in the top seven cards, that means there is something wrong with your deck. Lol.
I don’t think you’d need to worry about midgame when you have floatzel lv X, since once you have an octillery down it isn’t going away really. Stocking up on supporters also means you will usually have one when you need it, should something happen to your lv X.
About the deck, it does look fun to play, but I don’t think I’d take it to any tournament I want to win. Flippy cards just aren’t dependable, even if you have 5 flips. Octillery also has very little HP for standing up in front the whole game.
Cynthia’s Guidance is a nice card in this deck because it can pull out trainers and supporters that you would otherwise have to draw into in order to get them out of your deck. Then your deck is left with more sweet nougat (energy)!
Yeah I guess you guys are right. I’d have to play around with it to see what works best.

Usually I run my set-up with one jirachi for as long as I can until it gets KO’d then use its power to search out the FLoatzel Gl Lv. X, level up, retreat, and start “Water Vein”(ing). From that point on I average 4 energy flipped per attack, then its all about flips. If you are lucky you then 1 hit the next 6 things your opponent puts out. I usually average about 100 damage a turn. 100 damage is nice for free, but against alot of stage two decks if you don’t get that 1 shot KO your in trouble. This deck set-up consistently, but the damage output is very luck dependant. For example two games I played the other night went completely different. The first was against a Gengar and Gallade 4 spread deck I set up turn 3 and hit everything in one shot except the last Gengar and won by 4 prizes. The following game I played a Swarming Flygon deck with a Nidoqueen tech. I hit all the Flygons he put out for 100 and he just rotated them and healed them and although the prize count was close the game never was. That inconsistency is what probably regulates this to a fun deck. However I’ve found with my younger sister this can be a great deck in Juniors for BR’s and such.

you should have a bench shield on flotazel gl lv. x, to prevent sniping…
also, I run a deck like this (going to be used is cities 2 morrow) but I would run a BTS so that if you don’t have another octillery on the bench you can just put down remoraid, evolve, and free retreat with a flotazel or jirachi!
Yeah I guess you guys are right. I’d have to play around with it to see what works best.

Hey, I’ve been lurking around this site but this is my first post! Anyways, this is a really cool deck idea. Have you tried cards like leftovers? Extra healing for Octillery and I think it comes back with Flotzel’s lv x effects. Night’s teleporter might be a nice card to get rid of energy cards in your hand, and you get to search you deck for any one card. (If you get heads.)
Anyways, I just tried this deck out with slightly different cards, and I just want to say, Beware of that stupid Shiftry RR.
Left overs is a neat idea, but I’m not a fan of anything I don’t have a high chance of searching out or drawing into when I need it. Also I tried night teleporter, but even if you average the 50/50 with flipping its usually of little help. Bebe’s and Floatzel Gl Lv. X take care of putting energy back well enough, night teleporter in testing just didn’t work. Against Shiftry you gotta use Floatzel or attach energy and hit for 40 while giving yourself a 50% of them not attacking next turn if the cannot warp or retreat. Bad match-up yes, but unbeatable no. Cyclone energy helps here too.
also luckily Shiftry is rarely played

great idea!
you could put some luxury balls in! also you only need a max of 20 energy as midgame you’ll only be getting those whcih could mean you cant turn around a game if losing!
but great idea!
No need for luxury balls, as they cannot be re-used with jirachi if you start with one, also 28-30 energy seems to work perfect. With less you really need to thin the deck more, and with all the specials you need to make sure you draw into basic water when you need then to attach. Also as long as you get floatzel gl lv. x in play you re-use Octillery all game so late game if its all energy you get to flip 5 times like you want to. This is the most consistent deck set-up wise I’ve every tested if it wasn’t for flipping tails occasionally(50% of the time) this would be BDIF, lol maybe not, but definitely wuld reach tier one then be met with a swarm of shiftry decks.

Been play testing this heavily the last few days with a few metal energy to attack with jirachi when you don’t have a supporter, and a Azelf LA and Uxie LA. The results have been good 3-0 against T-tar Darkrai x, 5-0 against GG, 1-1 against Speedrill, 2-2 against a Flygon/Nidoqueen Flytrap variant, 3-0 against HippoGon, 0-2 against Shuppet, 0-1 LuxChomp, 2-1 against Gengar. My 15 year old sister just started playing and I think I’ll have her play this for CC’s as its so easy to use. I may have add a 2nd Floatzel Gl Lv. X if I get it in time then drop the Azelf LA for a mesprit LA and Azelf “downer Material”, to try to help against SP and Shuppet. Will have to test that idea to see if it works or distracts from the strategy.
Just play tested against shuppet again while searching the web, and with cyclone energies(i was testing without them the first couple games) Octillery won by a prize card. Cyclone’s allows you to take prizes by working around Mr. Mime, very helpful with this match-up. Now if only Luxray GL was not such a bother.

I think you have a little to many energys and not enough T/T/S and pokemon and what if your oppenent plays lightning you have NO defense
If I where you I would almost certainly play 4 quickball, seeing as how the number of pokemon in your deck is small.

I am tired of many of these article directories. I need a list of article directories that instantly accepts articles.
You’re making plenty of excellent points during this posting nevertheless its difficult in my opinion to concentrate on this content considering the complicated layout!
