So, I’ve been playing Pokémon TCG since the summer of 2009. I’ve only won 2 Battle Roads in my career. The City Championship I attended was the first CC I had ever played, so I was nervous. It was at a library in Carpinteria, CA. There were many people I’ve seen before at Battle Roads and at other leagues I went to. I was playing in the Seniors division and ran a Flygon / Gengar deck. I ran Gengar from SF and Mewtwo LV.X because I knew there were going to be a lot of SP decks. I ran Flygon from RR to do mass damage. So this is how it went…
Round 1 VS Flygon / Gengar
I started out with a Unown G and my opponent started out with a Baltoy I think. I went second and I used Call Energy to search for a Baltoy and a Trapinch. My opponent put down a Spiritomb and he started his set up. I draw a Bebe’s Search and search for Claydol. I drew Rare Candy and Flygyn, but I couldn’t use it because of Spiritomb’s Poké-body “Keystone Seal”. I attached an energy to Unown G an hit him for 50 and I KO’d his Spiritomb. After that KO I was able to take control of the match. My Flygon was hitting 90 per turn and he had trouble powering up; I ended up winning the match.
1-0
Round 2 VS Shuppet DONK
I knew from the beginning that I would have trouble with this match; my opponent was a world championship competitor. I won the coin toss and went first. I started out with a Gastly. I had a Call Energy in my hand. I attached it and searched for a Gastly and a Baltoy. It was my opponent’s turn and he took like 10 minutes doing nothing but searching for PlusPower, Expert Belt, Mr. Mime, and Shuppet. He Knocked Out my Gastly by dropping a Crobat G and attacking with “Fade Out”. I brought out my Gastly, used Rare Candy into Gengar and evolved Baltoy into Claydol and draw nothing but supporters. I only Knock Out one Pokémon. From that point on he Knocks Out all my Pokémon and takes 6 Prizes.
1-1
Round 3 VS Shuppet DONK
Once again I played another Shuppet deck and the player also had gone to World Championships. He went first and passed without attaching an energy. I started out with Ditto and used Call Energy to search for a Mewtwo and a Gastly. On his turn he plays 2 Poké Blower + and brings in my Mewtwo. He attaches an Expert Belt and one shots my Mewtwo and now I’m not sure what my next move is.
I bring in my Gastly, Rare Candy into Gengar and attach an energy and I pass. He retreats his Mr. Mime, attaches an energy to Shuppet, attaches Expert Belt, and 2 PlusPower. He drops 2 Crobats and uses “Flash Bite”, then uses 3 TGI Poké Turn. He plays Speed Stadium and rolls a heads and draws another TGI Poké Turn and does exactly enough to Knock Out my Gengar.
1-2
After every senior player finished they announced the results. I placed 3rd and got 4 Platinum Arceus Packs. 1st Place was a kid with a Gyarados deck and second place was the kid with the Shuppet deck.
Props: To all the players for attending the tournament and having a good time.

How many seniors were there total? Nice Article, shuppet seems rampant in the Juniors and Seniors.
Ritchie
there was only like 9 senior players. in my area yugioh is a bigger card game
Shuppet is actually a favorable matchup against Gengar. Since you probably run Looker’s, just use it to disrupt their Shuppetty hand. And Poltergeist is going to do epic damage if they have 4 PlusPowers and a Belt in their hand. Maybe run Gengar Lv.X so you have more HP and it keeps your options open in different game scenarios. Shuppet is a VERY annoying deck to play against, but here’s another strategy that might help for you. Whoever they send up after “Fade Out”, probably Mr. Mime, simply lock it up with Trapinch’s “Sand Tomb”. It wont do any damage and it will let you stall to get your perfect set up, because think about, a good Shuppet gets it’s ideal set up turn 1. I’ve scene many Shuppet lists that don’t run Warp Points, so that is one option. Another is adding 3-4 Spiritombs, which is GREAT with Gengar anyway, and a fantastic Shuppet counter. Good luck in the future!

You probably would have had a better shot against Shuppet if you would have Pitch-Darked instead of using the Call Energy ability. Therefore giving shuppet nothing to do since they play a ton of trainers and you another turn to setup and maybe even donk the Shuppet.
I agree, if you would have pitch darked i think the match would have been yours! Great job none the less kiddo. Well played and a very well written report. Keep up the good work.

Yeah you should have been able just to pitch dark the shuppets into submission.
But anyway you did a good job in the tournament.
A lot of people would not think to counter spirtomb with unown G, well played my freind.
Ritchie
i should of done that haha but i wasnt thinking right
Shuppet is a great matchup against Gengar as cp just said, do you run Looker’s?? There are also other pokemon such as one of the giratina’s which can do this aswell though it affects you both. Poltergeist WILL do huge damage. Shuppet is THE MOST annoying deck to play against. Again as cp said Spiritomb’s ability to prevent your oponent playing trainers from their hand will stop both the expert belt AND pluspower!
Well done for the 3rd place!
I would love to see your decklist!
btw what did you get in the packs?
Ritchie
i was nervous and my brain wasnt working haha

I used a rogue Shuppet donk in Regionals 2009, and I placed 12th, and that was only my second tournament, and a great improvement over my 34th at States. Mine was a Shuppet/Drifblim, I guess you might say… it was one hell of a deck! :D
