The Best of: HGSS Unleashed

With Unleashed now officially out I thought I would make a short list of what I think are the best cards in the set, but in those format and the next. If you have any agreements, disagreements, concerns, etc. I’d love to hear them in the comments section. I know it’s been a while since I’ve written something and I apologize for that, but I’m hoping to make this column a regular occurrence, as well as bring back Chat With The Champs very soon!

Top 5 Pokémon of HGSS: Unleashed –

pokemon-paradijs.com5.) Shaymin

Although I don’t think it will see universal use in this format, Shaymin is a pretty neat card. When you drop it, it alllows you to move energy around however you like, which can be very effective. Of course, it’s liable to being power sprayed and the attack isn’t all that good, but I still think it’ll make a splash in a few decks.

4.) Entei/Raikou LEGEND

I had to give a shout out to this guy just because of his unmatched potential. There are plenty of arguments against him, most of which I agree with, but the ability to kill Claydol, Uxie, Azelf, etc. all in one turn is amazing. Do I think it’s the most viable thing in the world? No, of course not, especially considering by the time Legend Box hits U.S. stores most of the aforementioned targets will be rotated, but I still think it has great potential.

3.) Blastoise

I know a lot of readers are going to immediately disagree with this choice, but I honestly think that this card could be something very solid. The ability to snipe for 100 is amazing. Of course, Luxray weakness and slowness in general prevent it from being huge, but I see some great opportunities for this card to be great.

pokemon-paradijs.com2.) Manaphy

This is a card that I don’t think really matters right now, but will become huge in the next format. I think that, with the loss of Claydol & Uxie, we’ll be leaning toward a more supporter-based draw/search, and our openings will rely on more starter Pokémon. Unless I’m wrong, I think Manaphy is the best starter we’ve got to offer, for what it does.

1.) Kingdra Prime

The #1 goes to Kingdra. Although on the surface it doesn’t seem all that amazing, when paired with Kingdra LA, it becomes a beast. I don’t think it’ll be anything format changing, but I definitely think it’ll boost Kingdra decks up to a higher level than they’ve been at this season, and allow them to be able to hold their own against most of the top tier decks. A free Crobat every turn and an extremely fast, cheap attack makes for a pretty decent card.

Honorable mentions: Steelix Prime, Ursaring Prime, Jirachi, Metagross.

The Top 5 Trainers/Supporters of HGSS: Unleashed –

5.) Pokémon Circulator

Although this card doesn’t seem like much now (although I would in-part disagree with that), it is the best way, post-rotation, to switch your opponent’s Pokémon. Luxray is of course better, but in a format without Warp Point I think this card will become a near-staple.

pokemon-paradijs.com4.) Engineer’s Adjustments

By far the most consistent draw we have post-rotation, that’s all there really is to say about it. Discarding an energy will hurt a lot of decks, and it’ll be interesting to see how decks are changed to rely on this.

3.) PlusPower

Everyone loves PlusPower!

2.) Judge

The best pure disruption trainer in the game, in my opinion. Arguments can be made for Looker’s and Wager, but I think this gives you the best pure disruption of any card in the game, and is going to become an important part of metagames both in this format and next.

1.) Rare Candy

Okay okay, so it’s kind of a cop out, but would any other argument make sense? Perhaps the single most important non-SP trainer in the game today, reprinted just in time for everyone who started playing with HGSS to get copious amounts.

Well, that’s all I’ve got. As I said before, please feel free to comment and let me know that I’m wrong/right, etc. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this matter. Thanks for reading.

I agree with manaphy being a staple. From the looks of it, it doesnt seem there will be a better chatot replacement. It has free retreat too! I do have to say poke circ doesnt seem it will be played that much because of your opponent being able to switch. I really do hope warp point is reprinted. And i would have to say Interviewer's should be mentioned because it can search special energies from your top 8 cards. However i do have to say another honorable mention should be Lanturn prime bc it can be a mewtwo counter in SP decks plus a counter to charizard and kingdra.

    Overall great article,

Great article! I agree with pgmcsskater about Interviewer's. That combined with Engineer's, Ninetails, and Manaphy seems like a decent search engine.

i agree with most of your cards but tyranitar prime? crobat prime? sure there is unown G for crobat prime.. but after rotation when unown G is gone, crobat prime will drop some heavy dmg. ALso tyranitar prime is too good. my friend runs it in locals and man is that thing beefy, those 2 are definately one of the better cards in the unleashed set

  4. Brandon Bittinger

I know it is from the original Heart Gold Soul Silver but I think that Jynx is a better replacement for Chatot plus it has 10 more Hp. The big down side is that it also has 1 retreat cost.

I think there's a bit too much “this is why this card will be popular in the future” to this article. I know that there's a rotation in the near future, but why not evaluate the cards for what they offer now? I don't think that there are a lot of people out there trying to trade for and UL Manaphy to play in their Battle Roads decks. That said, I think Kingdra and Shaymin will be big plays, but you missed the best trainer/supporter, Interviewer's.

As far as the future goes, there's a good chance Warp Point will stay around in the format for a while. It was reprinted in Stormfront, right?

Looks like there's yet another top 5 for unleashed as it seems.

Well written article that's for sure. That was a good idea to separate a top 5 for Pokemon and trainers. Now to mention one good point about this article:

For once, it's good to see someone mention Manaphy. It may not be good now as Chatot is virtually considered to be much better than it. However, when it'll be next year, Manaphy may really become our new Chatot since it is attacks for low energy, gives off good draw power, and it has a free retreat.

    Once again, good report!

I agree with the Cleffa thing or mabye you cud run the new dunsparce which is just as good all in all good article i wish someone wud post a good kingdra article i want to make on so bad anyways great article.

PLuse and Minum SV and HGSS are very good starters I think even better then Manaphy.

“Luxray is of course better, but in a format without Warp Point I think this card will become a near-staple.”

Err… Wasn't Warp Point reprinted in Platinum? And the rotation's only MD On?

  12. Scott Christian

Warp point is in Majestic Dawn so it will still be in rotation………

  13. 3lectricpancake

I think Shaymin will be a nice tech this format, especially with the two Shaymin lv.xs. The thankfullness poke-body and the ability to move energies around is a great combo.
