Quagsire GL: The New Faster Cursegar

Hey all!

I looked over some old cards I got from my Rising Rivals box and found this, a Quagsire GL. I start with the list and then my thoughts.

Decklist

Pokémon:
4 Quagsire GL
2 Crobat G
2 Luxray GL
2 Luxray GL LV.X
2 Spiritomb AR
1 Mr. Mime MT
2 Baltoy GE
2 Claydol GE
2 Unown Q
T/S/S:
4 Cyrus’s Conspiracy
1 Looker’s Investigation
3 Pokémon Collector
2 Roseanne’s Research
3 Bench Shield
3 Expert Belt
2 Pokémon Communication
4 Snowpoint Temple
2 TGI Energy Gain
4 TGI Poké Turn
3 TGI SP Radar
Energy:
3 W
3 SP Energy / Multi
4 Double Colorless

Now this is a pretty basic idea and it can be better, but that is my list thus far.

The Card

pokemon-paradijs.comQuagsire GL. It’s an Pokémon SP, and as many of us know SP decks are popular in POP and other events.

Now Quagsire’s attack is special. Most people know about Cursegar, and the strategy there is to hurt your opponent with 60 damage and then switch to your bench. Quagsire’s “Punch and Run” attack does the same, except Gengar AR´s attack also does 10 to any of your opponent’s bench.

Quagsire’s attack does only 40 damage not 60. But if you do play it like I do, you can also do 60 damage to your opponent.

Quagsire GL has a Poké-Body that says this “As long as Quagsire GL is on your bench prevent all damage done to Quagsire GL by attacks”. Now in my eyes this is extremely good. Garchomp or other snipers can’t hit him on the bench, while a Gengar can you hit on the bench. Nowadays with Luxray GL LV.X so popular this might not work so well.

But, your opponent needs at least 1 turn before he can use Luxray GL LV.X.

Strategy

The strategy here is to get out Spiritomb or Mr. Mime as a starter and Quagsire on the bench. When I play I usually use Darkness Grace to get a Claydol next turn.

Hopefully T2 you have a Quagsire GL out and can start attacking. Attach an Expert Belt on Quagsire and he will do 60 damage. A DCE and W Energy or a SP Energy and he is ready to go.

Now Quagsire GL´s attack says that you may switch Quagsire with any of your Pokémon on your bench, and because of Quagsire’s Poké-Body you can’t do any damage to Quagsire while he is on the bench.

Weakness and Resistance

pokemon-paradijs.comQuagsire’s resistance is very good because of the massive play of Luxray GL. He can resist a lot from him. Also he can 1HKO a Donphan, which is becoming more popular. Now that’s great damage.

The grass weakness on Quagsire GL isn’t a big deal if you don’t come across a Luxpluff deck.

Techs

Important techs in my deck are Crobats and Luxray GL LV.X. With Luxray I can force out any Pokémon that got about 60-80 HP and K.O it. Crobat provides more damage to those attacks.

Snowpoint Temple can be good and bad for the deck. Snowpoint Temple says that any basic Pokémon in play gets 20+ HP when the stadium is in play. If I have the misfortune to battle another Basic/Sp deck, I am in trouble.

Spiritomb and Mr. Mime are probably the most important cards in the deck. Spiritomb´s Poké-Body doesn’t let anyone play Trainers from their hand. This can be devastating for some decks that are heavily based on Trainer cards.

Now I am going to conclude this article and let you guys thinking about how you can make this deck better. I haven’t really tested a lot yet, but it gets harder late game against big hitter decks when they KO your Spiritomb and Mr. Mime.

Good luck and leave me some comments; let me know what you guys think.

Acutally, Quagsire can't OHKO Donphan decause of Donphan's Poke Body Exosceleton, which reduces all attacks done to Donphan by 20, so Hit and Run would only do 100 damage, and next turn Donphan would OHKO Quagsire.

  2. Michael Randolph

Pretty nifty idea but I'm not sure it will be as greatly used as gengar/spiritomb. Nice effort none the less.

  3. Dave Hueglin

Quagsire would be back on the Bench and someone else would get KO'd. So you would need to have a sacrifice Pokemon ready and Quagsire could come back up for a 2HKO. Not the best strategy, but Donphan will not always have 3 Energy on him either.

  4. Dave Hueglin

Good idea. I think you need a strategy to fight off Luxpluff though, as it is one of the top decks right now. Maybe Rapidash AR could fit in to help against Pkuff and against SPs.

  5. jordan baker

really interesting. I think this deck could be either really bad, or pretty good. it would definitely throw people off.

  6. Dave Hueglin

Unless it really fits into your deck's strategy, I'm not sure Uxie is the best play right now. Luxchomp is just looking for that kind of weak Bench sitter to be “Dragon Rushed” or “Bright Looked”. If you are just playing it for draw power, you might be just as well off with a Professor Oak's New Theory, Looker's Investigation or Volkner's Philosophy.

In this deck, Uxie might work as one of the “switch out” Pokemon.

This deck seems very cool! Its too bad that Quagsire, without Crobat G drops can't actually OHKO Donphan. If you get out Double Mime, you really don't have to worry too much about decks like Jumpluff. If you could find room for one or two Power Spray, you really wouldn't even have to worry about Luxray at all. Overall, this is a pretty good idea you have going and definitely worth tweaking and testing.

Very fun idea. I really enjoy it. But wait!

SP Energy is awful. -3 SP, +1 Lightning, +1 Psychic, +1 Water
The Psychic for Toxicroak Promo! Too good not to include! An ambipom G wouldn't hurt either. These two cards would GREATLY improve your mtachups with SP decks. So -2 Bench Shield, +Those two SP pokes.

Now, where are your Uxies! 2 Uxie would work wonders in here. -1 Bench Shield, -1 Snowpoint, +2 Uxie.
And a 2nd Mr. Mime, you combat 1-energy decks that will Warp Point, Cyclone Energy or Regice. -1 Snowpoint, +1 Mr. Mime.

This deck is not infinitely better! I would love to try it out now.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot on the 'Gym.. “Entei and Raikou LEGEND says Hi”.

  10. Renfield89

Dear God, please: no one listen to this man above me. Being “Bright Look/Dragon Rush bait” will never make Uxie less playable.
If there are no Uxie in your deck, it is no where near as competitive.

Everyone, play Uxie! It will save you games! Drawing up to seven will NEVER have a downside! It fits every strategy: to WIN.

Gengar has more HP, a lvX, a cool pokepower, a decent basic start to keep up constant trainer lock, and synergy with moonlight stadium (giving most of the deck free retreat).

Quaqsire is an SP, and of course gets all that comes with that, as well as being able to easily tech for your weaknesses. Also, a lower damage output, which isn't very good.

  12. Renfield89

    ARE YOU SERIOUS??????
You won'y play any Uxies.. Azelfs.. Mesprits.. Claydols.. Crobat G's.. Bronzong G's (post Galactic Switch!) in your decks.. because ONE, ::LEGEND:: card(s).. that sees LITTLE TO NO PLAY.. MAY tkae some bench prizes off of you!

YOU'RE RIGHT! Let's STOP playing good cards. Ingenius, good sir.

Why do I even bother? Honestly.

  13. Jason Chen

The biggest problem I see is that Quagsire does too less damage; 40 is a lot less than 60 + 10 bench + Curse PokePower

  14. Poteet24

Renfield gave you a ton of useful help, its definitely fun and different, and I've actually thought if it as I've leafed thru my binder. Outside of what Renfield said I have no real list help. Besides adding maybe a 3rd Tomb. I'm assuming the absence of sprays is because you're playing to switch to Tomb a bit. WHICH to those people saying Uxie is a free prize, SO IS TOMB. But wait, Tomb can be worth the sacrifice to slow your opponent down, gasp, Uxie can be sac'd because drawing up to seven is SO good.

Yes, let's put supporter Draw power into a deck that already has 10 supporters, and plays argubaly the best and most important one in the game (Cyrus's) Why do that when we can Roseannes for Uxie AND something else to get probably MORE cards?

  15. ADAM TUTTLE

So…… what do you do when I chaterlock on your active spiritomb?

  16. Theo Seeds

I don't think so, this one doesn't sound right. This IS an sp deck, so treat it like one and run Sprayz, also run +1 Unown Q for tool discarding things. I'd just run cursegar. No deal. Decent article, though, not just a Jumpluff or Luxchomp that everyone knows about and has a deck of.

  17. Perry Going

of course play uxie….but i do have to say entei/ raikou is a nice tech. I know someone who played it in Garde and won BRs with it.

  18. alex brock

How is this deck better than shuppet with an sp engine?

  19. eli moses

Really man you think this is better than Cursegar, it doesn't even have moonlight stadium in it and it would run 4 tombs if it was even close to it i'm sticking with my Cursegar deck and i'll get back to you if my ultimate trainer lock wins any tournaments i'll get back to ya and write up an article but you can easily knockout to Pokemon in one turn with Cursegar but with this roughly one mabye two if your lucky

  20. eli moses

I think its just another league deck, but i don't think its viable for Nats

  21. Dave Hueglin

It's just an idea. I don't think anything in Pokemon (other than maybe Luxury Ball) is as absolute as you make it out to be. I'm not suggesting anyone take my word as Gospel, in fact the phrase “I'm not sure” is pretty much on the fence. What I am suggesting is that people don't take Uxie as Gospel in every deck. Test it with, test it without – then do what yo think works best. Uxie can win you games, but it can also lose you games – what the ratio is is pretty hard to quantify unles you do some major, in depth, testing with your particular deck.

It's not just Luxchomp – Luxpluff likes an extra Bench sitter as well.

p.s. I'm not trying to start any raging battles here – I respect the opinion that Uxie is a very valuable card. But I also don't want to get tunnel vision and start thinking that every deck must have 1 or 2 Uxie to make it better. I agree, in many decks, probably this one included, Uxie does have a place in the deck.

Man, this is a very interesting idea that's for sure. Give Quagsire a Belt and some energies and it can have as much potential as Cursegar. The list however, does need some improvements.

The improvements I would really agree with Renfield89. The SP Energy needs to go since it isn't searchable, so put in some basic energies there. Consider running Toxicroak and Ambipom to counter Luxchomp, and even consider Mr. Mime for low energy attackers.

Yeah, I love the idea, but some improvement is needed that's for sure.

ok i might be wrong about this but i think gyarados beats it too because you only have basics so regice switches you only got 1 mime so reversals also get by that and gyarados with belt and/or crobats g(flash bite) will beat you and you 2 shot gyarados and gyarados 1 shots almost all your pokemon so you might want to watch out for gyarados

You said you had a box of Rising Rivals cards???
Mabey you have a Sharpedo RR (#49)
He has free retreat and 90 HP, so put him up after a “Punch & Run.” His Poke-BODY says:
If Sharpedo is your active Pokemon and is damaged by an attack (Even if Sharpedo is KO'd) Flip a coin. If heads, discard an energy attached to the attacking Pokemon.
    Great for disruption
