LuxChompPhan a counter to the Meta

LuxChomp is currently the most winningest deck in the format and its mirror matchup is arguably its toughest matchup. LuxChompPhan adds in a key component Donphan Prime which Knocks Out opposing Luxray GL LV.Xs in one hit. It also is very difficult for other LuxChomp players to kill Donphan Prime consistently. This addition can swing the matchup in your favor.

Card Analysis/Explanations

pokemon-paradijs.comLuxray GL- The basic form of one of your main cards, Luxray GL LV.X. Luxray GL has a situational attack, Trash Bolt. Trash Bolt does 70 damage for 1 L Energy and 2 C Energy and you have to discard an Energy Card from your hand. With Lucario GL in play this attack enables you to Knock Out a Gyarados SF in one hit.

Luxray GL LV.X- One of the main cards in the deck and has one of the best Poké Powers in the format, Bright Look. Bright Look allows you to bring up one of your opponent’s benched Pokémon into the Active Spot when you put Luxray GL LV.X on top of Luxray GL. This Poké Power is very disruptive, disruption is what makes LuxChomp a great deck.

Luxray GL LV.X also has a great attack, Flash Impact. Flash Impact does 60 damage for an Electric Energy and a C Energy at the cost of putting 30 damage on one of your own Pokémon. With Lucario GL in play Flash Impact + a Crobat G drop can score you a Knock Out in one hit on an opponent’s Gyarados SF.

Garchomp C- Alike Luxray GL, Garchomp C is the basic form of one of your main cards Garchomp C LV.X. Garchomp C is not much on his own but his attack Earthquake for 3 C Energy, in combination with a Crobat G drop you can Knock Out opposing Garchomp C LV.Xs in one hit.

pokemon-paradijs.comGarchomp C LV.X- Garchomp C LV.X has one of the best attacks in our current format. Dragon Rush allows you to do 80 damage to any Pokémon on your opponent’s side of the field at the cost of 3 C Energy, then you have to discard 2 Energy attached to Garchomp C. This attack is very disruptive because it has the ability to Knock Out a Claydol in one hit and stop your opponents draw engine.

Uxie- Uxie is the draw engine in the deck. His Poké Power Set Up is one of the best Poké Powers in the format. Set Up allows you to draw cards until you have 7 cards in your hand when you put Uxie from your hand onto your bench.

Uxie LV.X- Uxie LV.X like his basic form has a Poké Power that allows you to draw cards, Trade Off. Trade Off allows you to look at the top 2 cards of your deck and put one of those cards into your hand and then put then other on the bottom of your deck. Uxie X also has a solid attack, Zen Blade. Zen Blade for 2 C Energy does 60 damage. This attack in combination with Lucario GL and a Crobat G drop can Knock Out an opposing Machamp SF in one hit

Phanpy SW- Phanpy is the basic form of another of your main attackers, Donphan Prime. Most people prefer this Phanpy over the one from HGSS even though he has 10 less health because he has 1 less Retreat Cost.

pokemon-paradijs.comDonphan Prime- A main attacker in the deck, Donphan has 120 HP and a Poké Body that reduces damage from all attacks done to him by 20 damage. For 1 F Energy Donphan can do 60 Damage at the cost of doing 10 damage to all of your bench. This can Knock Out opposing Luxray GL LV.Xs in one hit.

Crobat G- Crobat G has a great Poké Power, Flash Bite. Flash Bite allows you to put 1 damage counter on any of your opponent’s Pokémon when you put Crobat G from your hand onto your bench. Crobat G has a situational attack for 1 P Energy and 1 C Energy does a double poison. This is great when trying to kill opposing Donphan Prime.

Bronzong G- Bronzong G has a great Poké Power, Galactic Switch. Galactic Switch allows you to once per turn move an Energy Card attached to one of your Pokémon SP to another one of your Pokémon. This is great for setting up attacks out of no where. You can set up a Dragon Rush in one turn without a Double Colorless Energy by using this.

Lucario GL- Lucario GL is only used for his Poké Body. His Poké Body makes all Pokémon in play has a x2 weakness. This can turn a two turn Knock Out on Gyarados, Machamp, and many other Pokémon into a 1HKO by adding additional damage in most cases.

pokemon-paradijs.comAmbipom G- Ambipom G is a great Garchomp C LV.X counter. For 2 C Energy Ambipom G can do 60 damage if the defending Pokémon has no Energy attached to them with Garchomp C’s weakness this attack Knocks Out Garchomp C LV.X in one hit when they have no Energy Cards attached.

Toxicroak G- Toxicroak G is a Luxray GL LV.X counter. Toxicroak G does 60 damage and then Poisons your opponents active Pokémon if one of your Pokémon were Knocked Out from damage during your opponent’s last turn. With weakness this can Knock Out an opposing Luxray GL LV.X in one hit.

Azelf LA- Azelf is used to fish Pokémon out of your prizes with his Poké Power, Time Walk.

Sableye SF- Sableye is great for recovery and starting a Cyrus chain by using his attack Impersonate. Impersonate allows you to fetch a Supporter out of your deck and then discard it then use the effect of the Supporter.

Unown G- A counter to Machamp and other effects of attacks. Unown G can be attached to any of your Pokémon as a Pokémon Tool. As a Pokémon Tool he prevents all effects of attacks excluding damage done to the Pokémon he is attached too. This negates the effect of Machamp’s Take Out.

Cyrus’s Conspiracy- Main supporter of the deck. Cyrus’s Conspiracy allows you to grab a Supporter, a Team Galactic’s Invention, and a Basic Energy Card out of your deck. This allows you to chain Cyrus’s Conspiracy to get your Team Galactic’s Inventions out.

Energy Overview- Call Energy is a staple in most decks, allows you to put 2 Pokémon from your deck onto your bench instead of attacking. Double Colorless Energy is another Special Energy card that counts as 2 C Energy. Lighting, Fighting, and P Energy are self explanatory.

Just beat me to it Poteet! I'd drop Unown G and Sableye SF for 2 Uxie LA

Why would you need toxicroak G if you have 2 donphans? Also, there seem to be a lot of techs in this list, i dont really like it much. If you are so worried about mirror matcheds, maybe include mewtwo lv x, and drop the ambipom, the donphans and the toxicroak.
The energy line doesnt seem to consistent, it could get dificult to get the one you want if you dont have a cyrus in your hand.
Finally, the lack of claydol is disturbing, and with only 1 sableye you will never start with it, and if you dont, theres no point in it at all.
    Thats only my opinion tough.

I agree, there's no need for Toxicroak G in here if there's already a fighting pokemon in here (Donphan Prime). I don't see 2-2 Donphan being necessary, I might drop 1-1 for 1-1 Claydol. Granted, 2-2 is more consistent, but I can see it running out of steam if you're not careful with playing Donphans.

while i don't think that this is an amazing deck idea, I don't think he needs claydol. it's basically a SP deck with donphan thrown in. Uxies should be good enough.

    -1 Donphan Prime HS
    -1 Phanpy SW
    -1 Sableye SF
    -1 Luxray GL Lv.X RR
    -1 Fighting Energy

    +2 Uxie
    +1-1 Claydol
    +1 Multi Energy

Donphan should only be a tec for any other a Mirror match or as a Mewtwo counter. there is also no Claydol or Uxie witch means that you have almost no draw power so 2 Uxie and a Claydol will speed the deck up a lot. The Sableye will have almost no effect on the deck because you only run one you have a very low chance of starting with it and late game it will not help at all. The reason I would take out one Luxray GL lvx is because you will only ever need one in play at any time.

Finally, someone put up an article pertaining to a Luxchomp using Donphan. Great read that's for sure, but I would consider some changes.

First off, the Toxicroak G Promo isn't that needed since you are running two Donphans, which take care of other Luxrays. Also, this list needs Uxies, so this is what I would do.

    -1 Toxicroak G Promo
-1 Sableye (rarely you will start with it)

    +2 Uxie (for consistency)

These suggestions will improve you deck for sure, and you can also consider Uxie Lv.X too if you want.

Still, great read! I'm glad you posted this LuxChompPhan analysis because it will certainly be helpful to many players whoever want to try playing Luxchomp with Donphan.

Donphan is so overrated in this deck. IF you're Phanpy isn't Dragon Rushed (big if), then you KO a SINGLE Luxray X. Now you are doing 1 for 60, ten to your bench and my Garchomps/Crobats shrug off the puny damage, double poison/snipe around, while you wait until you topdeck a Warp Point. At least this list runs Toxicroak as an alternative, BUT DOESN'T THAT SHOW THAT DONPHAN IS UNNECESSARY???

Finally, I would just like to note that players who automatically exclude/scoff at Claydol in SP decks just don't know what they are talking about.

  11. Martin Garcia

you can choose the claydol or the uxies, not both, that much i agree, but i dont see how a 1-1 claydol is not benefitial to an SP deck

  12. jordan baker

its not needed at all, its just going to slow you down.

  13. Poteet24

not really….you run the same (maybe one less uxie count) and the only matchups that don't get IMPROVED by Claydol is SP….so you just don't sure for the pieces

  14. Michael Randolph

Seems like a nifty enough idea, I have seen lists like this work before, seeing as how I don't run luxchomp I can't offer much advise, Uxie/Claydol would appear to be a solid choice IMO.

  15. Tyler Z

Sableye is a searchable cyrus chain which is the reason it sees play in this deck

I play Toxicroak g promo in the deck because it is easily gotten out where as donphan takes 2 turns

  16. jconti

So that's why you want to borrow my Donphan Primes! As usual, excellent intelligent article. Thanks for updating the rest of us on this interesting deck idea!

    See you at Nats!

    John

  17. Adam Capriola

The Sableye is a really good idea, I do think you gotta play some Uxies though.

But at any rate, thanks for sharing Tyler! See you at Nationals.

  18. alex brock

This looks more like the meta, rather than a counter to it….

  19. Perry Going

searching for a claydol is much harder than searching for an uxie i say

  20. Poteet24

yes… that was never an argument. But you already play cards that can get you to Claydol in the matchups it will be beneficial in.
