Kenny Wisdom’s Lacey, WA Battle Road report

[Firstly, let me say that I know this report is pretty lackluster, but I had the itch to write a report, and considering this is my last premier event of the season I really had no choice, haha. To make up for it I’ll try to make the report as detailed as possible.]

I debate what to play for a few days but decide that since this was going to be my last tournament of the season I’d play Jumpluff, as I enjoy playing it and haven’t done so in a tournament yet. I make the most consistent list possible which, since a few teammates are running it for the remainder of the season I won’t give out. My fiance is judging so I know that the day won’t be a total bust even if I do terribly, haha.

Round 1: ??? w/ Darkrai/T-Tar

pokemon-paradijs.comI’ve never met this guy before but he seems nice. I start Hoppip to his Sableye but luckily he doesn’t get the T1. He drops Darkrai at which point I’m surprised because I figured I was playing either Gyarados or Sablelock, both of which I hate to play against, haha. He Impersonates for a Bebe’s I believe, and takes a Dakrai LV.X. I open decently and am able to get the Jumpluff out, and hit a Warp Point so he has to sac his Dakrai. I get the Claydol out as well as the Luxray and feel I have a decent board control.

I take the first few prizes, but he mounts somewhat of a comeback and takes a prize or two with some Darkrai sleep shenanigans. The turning point in the game is when he drops his Expert Belt on his Pupitar so that he can Uxie drop for 7, but whiffs the T-Tar. I Bright Look, Poké Turn, Mass Attack for the game next turn. GG

1-0

Round 2: David C. w/ Jumpluff

I hate his luck based the Jumpluff mirror is, and I know it’s going to be an uphill battle against a great player like David (2nd at Worlds in Seniors last year). I go first with my Hoppip to his Baltoy and my ultimate Pokémon embarassment happens. I attach an energy to Hoppip, drop a Bat and a Hoppip, and offer my handshake for the GG. He gives me a confused look and I realize that Bounce != Mass Attack, haha.

I hang my head in shame and bounce for 10. He proceeds to get a Jumpluff out and wreck my board, and I’m forced to play off the top. He eventually gets like 4 Prizes ahead and I scoop. To be fair he didn’t really have all that good of a set-up, but I had absolutely nothing, heh.

1-1

Round 3: Greg R. w/ Mamoswine

Greg is a great guy and he’s known for making rogue decks work. His love of Mamoswine is like no other. He opens Azelf and passes, and I get a decent set-up but am only able to get Skiploom out. He topdecks a BTS and scoops, as he had no way to get another Pokémon into play. I was rather disapppointed as I REALLY wanted to play against Mamoswine, haha.

2-1

Round 4: Aaron H. w/ Sablelock

Aaron is a great guy. His father-in-law, wife, and son were some of the first people to welcome us into the community, and we’ve been great friends ever since. His son is an integral part of Team B-Side, and his whole family are just great people overall. He opens Honchkrow to my Hoppip, but can’t get the donk.

We proceed to have a pretty great game with the lead bouncing back and forth and crucial draws/whiffs really changing the pace of the game. In the end he gets two Garchomps set up and I really can’t do anything as he takes out both of my Claydols for game. To be fair I had 2 Communications, a Hoppip, a Skiploom, and my Luxray line prized, but what can you do. Great game.

2-2

At this point I know I’m not going to make cut but I’ve had a fun day so what the hey.

Round 5: Andrew F. w/ Palkia Lock

pokemon-paradijs.comAndrew is a good guy and this years state champion. We talk a lot of crap to each other on a pretty constant basis, haha, so I’m really hoping I pull this one off, even though I figure I won’t as he made this build specifically to beat Jumpluff. I can’t remember the beginning of the game, but I get an early lead, but as soon as he starts dropping Mesprits I know I’m in trouble. I misplay by dropping an Expert Belt and he takes a pretty good lead.

I nearly decide to scoop, but I figure I’ll play it out. I topdeck a Collector which is my saving grace as it allows me to get Hoppip and Ditto. Normally Ditto is only used for the mirror, but it’s the only thing that saves me here as I stall with it to build up 2 Pluffs. After I hit the energy to retreat Ditto and bring it down to 1-2 in prizes he know he can’t pull it and off and scoops. GG

3-2

All in all, a pretty good day. I didn’t do too well but I won the matches I wanted to win (3-0 against Andrew now WHAT!), and the top cut turns out to be solid and have a lot of my favorite people in the community in it. Afterword we go to Denny’s where I ignore my fiance to talk shop with Trevor, haha.

Props:
Trevor for getting 2nd
Taco Del Mar
Amelia for winning
Aaron & Shiela for playing
Andrew for making a seemingly good metagame choice
Niki, Debbie, and Ashley for TOing/Judging
Team B-Side for helping perfect the build.

Slops:
David C. for being a terrible, terrible person in top 2.

Thanks for reading!

Great report Kenny! You report was very well-written.

I can tell that you did a great job using Jumpluff. After all, many of your matches must've been epic too.

Once again, awesome report! Hopefully, I will see you at nats.

Well man I happy you won the matches that mattered. I know how that feels because I beat out a guy that stalled me in a match once and it made my day even though I got 4th overall, none-the-less my happiness was unrivaled. Great report brother.

Hey Kenny. This comment isn't really about your article, but I thought this was the easiest way for me to reach you.

I had an idea about Twitter at Nationals recently, and I wrote it up on TeamOmar.com
    http://www.teamomar.com/2010/06/18/are-you-atwi

I realized that you had a similar thought, and I hoped that you might have some suggestions for me.

Great article! I've never heard of the term “whiffs” – can anyone give me a brief description? Tried looking it up but didn't make much sense.

  8. jordan baker

It can be used to say you missed a coin flip or dice roll, or you tried searching for something (with a supporter or uxie/claydol) but you didn't get what you needed.

jordan have u ever written a nice comment? u only see the bad things of an article, write a better one, i wanna see you can do it, everybody likes the article, only u dont

  10. jordan baker

What did I say that wasn't nice? He asked what whiffed means and I explained it. Am I missing something?

  11. Karol Nowak

That's odd. You posted the exact same comment I made for this article. Oh well, looks like we might have the same thoughts that for sure, because this was an awesome article all right.
