Autumn BR’s: Dayton, OH Chapter

Dayton, OH Autumn Battle Roads
Graham Poteet

Masters Division (12 People)
4 Rounds – Top 2

Team Sugarbush actually makes up for 7 of the 12 players here, but it’s all good, it’s a competitive tournament.

After since the format shift to MD-On, I had been struggling to find a deck. Gengar/Vileplume bores me, I am not as skilled with Dialga/Chomp as I would like to be. LuxChomp is good, but it’s mirrors make you want to smash mirrors, and anything else just wasn’t feeling right yet. I decided to build a mish-mash of SP, mainly designed to be able to live thru Vileplume variants long enough to win, and to beat Dialga/Chomp.

I build this Blaziken FB/Absol G deck, just aiming for consistency, it is a BR after all.

Pokémon

3 Blaziken FB
1 Blaziken FB LV.X
2 Absol G
2 Absol G LV.X
3 Uxie LA
1 Uxie LV.X
2 Crobat G
1 Azelf LA
1 Unown Q MD

T/S/S

4 Cyrus’s Conspiracy
4 Poké Turn
3 Energy Gain
3 Power Spray
3 SP Radar
2 Premier Ball
3 Pokémon Collector
2 Bebe’s Search
1 Palmer’s Contribution
1 Aaron’s Collection
1 VS Seeker
1 Luxury Ball
2 Copycat
2 Energy Exchanger

Energy

3 R
3 D
3 Call
2 Warp
1 P

Like I said, simple…cut all the techs/riskier plays, and just aimed for consistency…

On to the tournament, because that’s probably what you want to read.

pokemon-paradijs.comRound 1
VS Megan P. (Gengar/Plume/Tomb)

My start is pretty bad: a lone Uxie with no Call energy or Supporters. Meanwhile she starts Tomb, and I’m already shaking my head after “winning” the coin flip. I draw/pass, and almost expect to be Shadow Room/Flash Bit donked. Luckily I’m not, as her turn ends with a Darkness Grace into a Gloom.

I rip a Collector off the top and get to work. I hunt out Unown Q, Blaziken FB, and Absol G. I level up to the Uxie X I had had since my opening seven. I trade off and rip into a Cyrus’s Conspiracy. I attach Q to Uxie, retreat for Blaziken. After attaching a Fire to Blaziken, I Luring Flame the benched Gloom to end my turn. Unfortunately the Gloom gets Warp Energy’d to the bench. She promotes a Gastly, benches another and Rare Candies into Gengar, attaches a P Energy to Gengar and Pitch Darks with the Gastly to continue my trainer lock without locking herself.

My turn I Cyrus out another Cyrus, a Spray, and a R Energy. I trade off into a Crobat G, and bench it Flash Biting the Gengar. I again Luring Flame the Gloom to end my turn. Her turn she attaches to Gloom, then manually retreats it to the bench for Gengar. Bebe’s Searches for a Vileplume, plays it, and Shadow Rooms something. I continue my Cyrus Chain, grabbing a Dark, Energy Gain, and Cyrus. I again Luring Flame the Vileplume to end my turn.

This time the Vileplume ends up staying active. I continue building a pretty decent side hand, and Jet Shoot for the first KO of the game. After this things are a tad murky. The trainer lock never gets online, and I’m able to get some Psychic Restore and Flash Bite KOs on her Gengars. Time is called with her down 3-2 on her turn. She ties the Game 2-2.

After the 3 turns, it’s still tied 2-2. Her turn she Level Downs my Absol G, thinking I’ve got three trainers and goes to Poltergeist. I only have two, allowing myself to live through. My turn, I retreat to a Blaziken, and Luring Flame a benched Uxie (she has no cards in hand). As long as she doesn’t draw an Energy or Unown Q, I should have the game. She whiffs, and with no way to retreat, I KO Uxie for the game.

Win 1-0

Round 2
VS Ande M. (Charizard G/Blaziken FB)

Quick SP-like searching start for this one on both sides. She is on a bit of an energy drought, and I’m able to capitalize with disruption, and cheaper attackers. If I’m KO’d I am able to keep the pace, and eventually am able to capitalize once I get the first prize.

Win 2-0

pokebeach.comRound 3
VS Alex L. (Blaziken FB/Garchopm C)

Easy report for this one. I start lone Blaziken. He mulligans twice. I take those cards, plus my draw on turn one…no energy. Pass it to him. He Radars for a Crobat G, Poké Turns it, and attaches a DCE for the donk. Oh well.

Loss 2-1

After our 37 second game, we raid the shops singles for a bunch of good deals. Props!

Round 4
VS Matt B. (Gengar/Plume/Tomb)

Pretty good start here for me. I go first again though, and he is able to begin the trainer lock on his first turn. I decide to use the Luring Flame method, and it works much quicker this time, allowing me to KO an active Vileplume on Turn 3. From there, I make quick work of all other setting up, by Power Spraying an attempted Uxie for 7 on turn 4, and Jet Shooting for the win.

Win 3-1

At this point there’s one 4-0 and two 3-1’s. I’m the 3-1 that misses the top two, but it’s no big deal as I’m happy that the season has finally started.

Here’s the final standings/decks.

1. Kyle L. – Lux/Chomp
2. Dustin Z. – Dialga/Chomp
3. Graham P. – Blaziken FB/Absol G
4. Matt B. – Gengar/Plume/Tomb

I assume your opponent eventually opened with an ambipom?

  5. Adam Capriola

    Good job Graham!

Any reason you chose Absol to partner up with Blaziken? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that before.

Gengar…hit for 90, let them retreat, attempt Luring Flame, or double bat it. I’m probably just going to run Blaziken/Garchomp/silliness next weekend (there are no BRs near me this weekend) as it has a better meta matchups….

Attaching 2 energies in 1 turn? Warp and Psychic?

  7. Errol Gabriel Curioso

Good job with the vileplume matchup, maybe I’ll try to squeeze 2-1 Blaziken FB line in my Luxchomp, because Dialga just isn’t working for me. :D Thanks for sharing.

Was Absol G there to Destroy Gengar? I like that idea allot!
