Revamped Layout

Hey everyone,

It’s been about a week or two since I made some major alterations to the layout of the site, so now since you’d had time to become accustomed to the changes, what are your thoughts?

Do you like the way things look? Is there anything I should fix or could do better?

Let me know your opinions because I do try to listen to you guys and make changes based on your suggestions.

Thanks!

-Adam

P.S. Here is a grainy picture of the the site from about a year ago:

It sure has come a long way…

Also just a reminder incase anyone missed the announcement, SixPrizes Underground is launching this Tuesday (9/28) at 9 AM Eastern Time.

Any questions, just e-mail me (adam@sixprizes.com) and I will be happy to answer them.

I love the new layout, great job!
However, the Card of the Day won’t load correctly for me. It only loads a few pixels of the card (the very top) and then stops. And not just today, it has never loaded more than ~5-10% for me. Don’t know if this is a browser incompatibility (I’m using IE), but it causes me to sometimes completely miss the CotD~
Also, when the CotD is a TSS-Card I won’t know which one it is until I actually click on it because the top part of such cards is always the same…

If there is any way to fix this that would be great, otherwise it’s near perfect IMO

      Hey Stefan,

Thanks for letting me know about that, I had no idea that was happening. I’m sure there are a ton of things that aren’t working right that I don’t know about.

I’ll try to see what I can do to fix it, but I might not be able to get to that until sometime in the middle of the week.

What browser do you use btw? Everything looks ok on Chrome for me.

        • Adam Capriola  → Stefan

          Doh I missed that, sorry!

I guess it depends on which version of IE you’re using, but I’d think about trying a different browser if you can. IE tends to have issues when viewing some sites. I personally like Chrome because it’s very fast.

It’s hard for me to fix issues that are browser specific but I’ll see what I can do.

Not sure, he started out with it as the art, then went to the card, but since yesterday, it’s been zoomed in again. I personally like the card better as it helps it stand out from the rest of the page.

        • Adam Capriola  → Matthew

Originally I showed the whole card but I didn’t really like how it looked. I think I’m going to stick with zoomed in images of the artwork… I think they look cool.

What’s your (or anyone’s) opinion on that?

  2. Dakota Streck

My only advice for the site would be to make 1 minor changes. On the right side, where it lists the hot topics. Right now, it lists 6 articles, I’d lower it to 5. It won’t make much difference, just something I’d do.

Oh, one other suggestion that could work(take it with a grain of salt) is perhaps make make the pages just a little more colorful by perhaps putting up some good images of Pokemon or something? I don’t know, you’d have to fiddle around with it, but it could look cool.

    • Adam Capriola  → Dakota

I probably won’t be putting images of Pokemon just because I want to keep things simple. Plus I don’t want to run into copyright issues by putting Pokemon in the logo or anything.

I’ll think about changing the number of hot topics. I just chose 6 to go along with 6 prizes.

Nice!! The layout improvements are nice… I like the COTD on the side, its more noticeable there!

I would like to see dates associated with the teasers on the main page for the articles.

    • Adam Capriola  → Anonymous

I actually purposely didn’t put the dates because sometimes people will see a date on an article and automatically think it’s old news (even if they haven’t read it yet).

If it bothers a lot of people I could change it though.

Hey Adam, I’ve just been working mostly, trying to squeeze in some tournament play here and there. I did write a couple articles on the gym and would like to contribute to 6p when I get the chance! I’ll stay in touch!

    • Adam Capriola  → Eelis

Thanks for the input Master Entei.

I’m not totally sure what you mean by the hole in the top left corner. Like just above the logo? I’m not sure what to put there, it’s not a ton of space. I could condense the white space a little bit though.

I could make the pages stretch to full screen, but I kind of want the site to look the same for everyone, not matter how big your screen is. Most websites nowadays are a set width.

As far as the space of the left, are you referring to the white or the beige? I could make the white space a little wider.

      • Eelis Peltola  → Adam

I’m not always very clear when speaking English, sorry. :/
I’ve got a 17″W[ide?] screen, so I’ve got lots of free space on the sides, which makes the site look smaller…
With the “hole”, I meant the white space next to the SixPrizes logo on the top of the page. If you compare it to the old system, with the bigger logo and the blue text on the right of it, it looks a bit too blank. And I mixed up left and right. xP Yeah, to the right of the logo is a blank space, and you could move the logo a bit to the right to fill it.
I meant that there’s not much space for the articles on the main page anymore, with the columns taking up space.

        • Adam Capriola  → Eelis

Ohhhh ok I think I got you. You have an ad blocker, right? There is normally an advertisement in that white space to the right of the logo. That’s why it looks funny for you. I’m not sure if I can have something fill in if you have an ad blocker, but I’ll look into it.

Could you take a screenshot of the spacing of the articles to point it out to me? Like maybe take a screenshot then draw arrows pointing to it? I just want to clarify, I know it’s hard to explain these kinds of things. A picture would be easier. :)

You don’t have to, but if you do send it to adam@sixprizes.com

          And I am jealous of your 17″ screen… 13″ here. :P

        • Eelis Peltola  → Adam

Yeah, I realized that this morning when I was on my parents’ computer to sign up for Underground(which btw didn’t work, PayPal told me to link a card to my account “for instant payment”, and for some reason wouldn’t take my card… is PayPal really the only way to pay for the service?). My parents’ computer doesn’t have an adblocker, and I saw the ad. :P Problem solved.

I don’t have time to take a pic/modify it right now, but if you add up the width of the left column(COTD etc.) and the right column (Featured Articles etc.), you get about the width of the center column (articles). I’d like the center column, Latest Articles, to be a bit wider… not that it matters that much.

I’d change 5″ of screen for better performance any time, my laptop sucks. :P

        • Adam Capriola  → Eelis

You should be able to connect a bank account to your paypal too. I am honestly not sure why it’s asking everyone for a credit card. I had tested the payment system out myself and it didn’t ask me for anything.

I guess I already had my bank account (or debit card) connected. But yea Paypal is the only way. E-mail me at adam@sixprizes.com and we can discuss other options if you want.

Ok I see what you’re saying about the column width. I’ll think about changing it, give me a couple days to think about it. :P
