My Day At Battle Road In Oslo, Norway!

This is my first big tournament aside from an Undaunted prerelease, and I think it went pretty well. I played my own list of FlyPhan. I only played three matches because there was so few player in the Masters division. There were only about 8 players or so, but, that didn’t matter.

I’ll start off with my list:

Pokémon: 21

4 Phanpy HS
3 Donphan Prime
3 Trapinch RR
2 Vibrava RR
3 Flygon RR
1 Flygon LV.X
1 Nidoran + RR
1 Nidoqueen RR
2 Uxie LA
1 Azelf LA

T/S/S: 26

4 Rare Candy
2 Pokémon Communication
1 Luxury Ball
1 Premier Ball
3 Pokémon Collector
2 Professor Oak’s New Theory
2 Interviewer’s Question
3 Bebe’s Search
2 Professor Elm’s Training Method
1 Flower Shop Lady
1 Judge
3 Broken Time-Space
1 Expert Belt

Energy: 13

8 F
3 Double Colorless
2 P

Now, on to the report.

Match 1 – Speedy Donphan

pokemon-paradijs.comI started my day playing against the Norwegian Champion, Benjamin B. He played a speedy Donphan deck, which surprised me. I started with one Trapinch and one Phanpy, thinking of knocking his Phanpy out fast. Turn 1 I hit him for 20 damage, and he returned 20 damage back because of Phanpy’s attack. Then, on turn 3, I evolved into Vibrava, but failed on the flips, and didn’t donk him.

After that we continued mirror, Donphan vs. Donphan, but because of his Expert Belts, he survied longer than me, and I was forced to send out Flygon. That turn, he benched his Entei Raikou Legend, and used his genius way to load both Donphan and Legend fast. Using the stadium card, Stark Mountain, combined with Regirock from Legends Awakened, he had loaded up all his Donphans through the game, but now he sent out the Entei Raikou Legend and Knocked Out my Uxie and Azelf for his two last prizes with Thunder Fall. He also used Manectric from Platinum to prevent damage from being done to his bench.

0-1

Match 2 – The Almighty Arceus

I played my second match against an Arceus deck. I couldn’t tell why the heck he only played Arceus, but, it was actually better that I thought. Turn 2 he used Pokémon Collector to fill up his bench, and used the colorless Arceus for Ripple Swell, which attaches 1 Energy to all of his Arceus. The game wasn’t that exciting because most of the time I used Flygon LV.X and 1HKO’d most of his mighty Arceus.

1-1

Match 3 – Kingdra Variation

This game was one of the matches that scared me the most. When he said he played Kingdra, I decided to go for Flygon. Luckily, I ended up with a fully loaded and Belted Flygon LV.X pretty early in the game. I was also very lucky with the draws I got, and had a bench full of Donphans and Flygons and Nidoqueens, which was going to help me a lot. The first 3 Prizes was easy for me, but when he got into two Spray Splashing Kingdras AND Flash Biting Crobat WITH Poké Turn, my Flygon couldn’t handle it. I sent out a Uxie, and then 3 Donphans in a row. With Spray Splashing Kingdra, he could 1HKO my Donphans.

On my bench, there was a little Trapinch lying all the time, waiting for to become a Flygon, and luckily, it turned suddenly into a Flygon LV.X, using my last Rare Candy, and of course my lovely Premier Ball. I managed to KO one of the Kingdras he had, only slightly damaged by Donphan, but Flygon finished it off. Both of us only had 1 Prize card left, but fortunately for me, I sniped his Floatzel GL LV.X with Extreme Attack, and pulled the last prize.

2-1

So my first Battle Road ended up surprisingly well. Despite the fact that I was the youngest player in the Masters division, I finished as second place, with Erlend B being first.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for my deck and thanks for reading!

I played FlyChamp (similar concept) all last season and won a few smaller tournies, so perhaps I can offer some insight:

Energy: I think every Flygon deck should max out DCE. You can find a space by pulling a Psychic as it’s pretty rare that you’ll ever be attacking with Azelf or Nido. I’d also subtract 1 Fighting – 12 is plenty of energy, especially with a Flower Shop Lady.

Supporters/Trainers: I don’t really see the purpose of Professor Elm’s Training Method without Bebe’s being maxed out because you can’t find Flygon X or a basic Pokemon with it. I’d pull both: use 1 for a 4th Bebe’s and 1 for a Warp Point. You don’t have any switch cards, which can leave you in a tough spot since Donphan’s retreat cost is HUUUGE. I’d pull the Premier Ball for a 2nd Warp Point. Flygon X can be sought out with Bebe’s or Communication and can be rescued with Flower Shop Lady. In general, playing 1 card for 1 card hurts consistency.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Cool that youve tried FlyChamp! I actually wondered if Im gonna play FlyChamp too, but ended up with FlyPhan…

      1. The psychic Energies is for Flygon. I am rarely going to attack with Nido or Azelf, but they are in the deck to get free retreat cost for all of my psychic pokemon. Flygon Poke-Body says:
“If any basic Energy card attached to Flygon is the same type as any of your Pokemon, the Retreat Cost for that Pokemon is 0”
You see why I use psychic now?
      2. I have had problems with getting energies for Donphan before, that`s why I have ensured me with lots of fighting energy.

      3. I have now taken out Professor Elms Training Method and maxed out Bebes, plus on Warp Point in the early game.
I dont need more Warp Point or Switch because of Flygons Body.

I actually thought you knew about the common rule with Fly-decks. The reason that both Donphan, Machamp and Hippowdon is good with Flygon, is just because they get free retreat cost…

Beklager, men jeg er i Sveits akkurat nå. :( Men dette er kjempebra! Endelig noen som snakker norsk! Jeg bor i California, så ikke så mange folk snakker norsk!Did I spell that right? I haven’t been typing in Norwegian for a very long time!

        • Callylove  → thomas

Så du er norsk, eller hva? Er ikke mange i California som snakker norsk, kan jeg tenke meg, nei.

Is it many norwegians in California or what? I was there this summer; San Francisco, Hollywood etc.! =)
I actually met norwegians in San Francisco, and they lived there. Maybe it was you? :P

        • thomas clip  → Callylove

Vel, jeg er ikke i San Francisco-området. Men jeg er litt i området. Bare gå nord-vest, og du kommer til Walnut Creek, en rolig liten by. :)

To my knowledge, in my area there are no Norwegians in my area except us. I’m also Belgian, so of course, trilingual!

          This is so cool.

        • Callylove  → thomas

Oh, so you`re half norwegian, half Belgian and lives in San Francisco! =)

          How cool!
