The Best of Triumphant!

Hey guys! It is Peter Bae here once again to talk to you guys about the new set coming up Triumphant! Recently Triumphant has been getting a lot of hype because of all the good cards in the set and is arguably format changing. I also believe that Triumphant will be a format changing set and it definitely won’t be a let down like the past few sets.

With the prerelease coming up, I thought I’d talk to you guys about the cards that you should keep an eye out for and try to get some of so you do not lose out!

Triumphant is a 102 card set according to Wikipedia and it will have many Primes from the Japanese set Lost Link and Clash at the Summit. So let’s get talking:

pokebeach.com1. Gengar Prime
The card that has been getting the most hype in the set, and is arguably the format changing card. Gengar Prime comes from the Japanese set Lost Link and I must say, it is definitely good and we will see it played a lot. Like the other 2 Gengar brothers from Arceus set and Stormfront, Gengar Prime will have free retreat, which is always good and it has the most HP out of all the Gengars, a whopping 130 HP.

He has a Poké-Body called “Catastrophe” which puts the Pokémon Gengar Prime Knocked Out in to the Lost Zone. This is great because this will give your opponent a hard time to recover once you’ve Knocked Out one of their main Pokémon. Gengar Prime also has 2 great attacks that cannot be overlooked.

The attack “Cast in to the Darkness” lets you look at your opponent’s hand, choose all the Pokémon in your opponent’s hand equal to the number of P Energies attached to Gengar Prime, for just 1 P Energy. This is especially great when the opponent uses Pokémon Collector from Sableye’s attack “Impersonate”.

His second attack “Cursed Drop” lets you put 4 damage counters any way you like on your opponent’s board for just 1 P Energy and 1 C Energy. This pairs up great with Gengar LV.X’s attack “Compound Pain” for some major spreading damage. However, the x2 weakness to Darkness is very disappointing as Umbreon from the set Undaunted will be teched almost in all decks if Gengar Prime becomes a huge threat, along with other Dark Pokémon like Absol G LV.X.

2. Lost World
If Gengar Prime is the ice cream, than this card is the cherry on top. This card is what makes Gengar Prime the biggest threat from the set. Lost World is a stadium card where if your opponent has 6 or more Pokémon cards in his Lost Zone, you can play it down and you are declared the winner of the game. This card has Gengar Prime written all over it.

pokebeach.com3. Hunter
Hunter is a great supporter from the set. When you play it down, you and your opponent each pick up 1 benched Pokémon and all cards attached to it. This card pairs greatly with almost all decks, especially with Gengar Prime. In every deck, Hunter can be splashed because you can use it to reuse Uxie for more draw, reuse Crobat G’s for extra damage, or just to even heal, or for Gengar Prime, to make sure your opponent has a Pokémon card on his/her hand.

4. Twins
Twins is also a very good supporter from the set. When you are down in prizes, you can play the supporter to get any 2 cards from the deck to your hand. This is very good for the stage 2 decks which usually ends up losing their first prize to SP match ups or a deck thats not focused on getting prizes but to deck the other player out.

5. Machamp Prime
Machamp Prime is definitely going to a deck that will be in the top tier. Machamp Prime is a stage 2 Pokémon, good 150 HP, and has a great Poké-Power, along with 2 great attacks. His Poké-Power, “Fighting Tag” let’s you move all your active Pokémon’s F Energy to your Machamp Prime, and when you do, you can switch the 2 Pokémon. It’s like a built in Lucian’s Assignment and Switch.

His first attack, “Crushing Punch” does 60 damage for 1 Fighting and 2 C Energy. Not so much damage, however, it lets you discard 1 Special Energy attached to the defending Pokémon.

His second attack is the attack you should worry out for, the “Champ Buster”. For 2 Fighting and 2 C Energy, you do a devastating 100 damage and 10 more for each damaged Pokémon on your bench. This pairs up very nicely with Donphan and we will definitely see Donphan/Machamp Prime deck to come out. However, Machamp Prime has a x2 weakness to Psychic which is unfortunate.

These are probably the top cards that will be coming out from the set that will most likely make it on the top tier decklists. However, Triumphant has many more Pokémon Primes, Energies, Supporters, and Trainers that are interesting. Here are a few that did not quite make the list:

Yanmega Prime
Yanmega Prime is a stage 1, 100 HP grass type Pokémon. His Poké-Body “Insight” lets you use Yanmega Prime’s attack without any energy cost if you have the same amount of hand as your opponent’s. Paired up with cards like Judge, and Copycat, you will be hitting at a moderate to high damage with Yanmega Prime’s attacks before your opponent’s set up.

Mew Prime
Mew Prime is a basic, 60 HP Psychic Pokémon that has a very interesting Poké-Body. Mew Prime’s Poké-Body “Lost Link” lets you use any attacks from either player’s Pokémon in the Lost Zone if you meet the energy requirement. Mew Prime’s attack “Sending to Hell” lets you put one Pokémon card from your deck to the Lost Zone for 1 P Energy. This can be paired up with Pokémon that has 1 Psychic or Colorless attack requirements.

Black Belt
Black Belt is a Supporter card that you can use if you have more Prize cards remaining. When in play, your active Pokémon will do 40 more damage to the defending Pokémon.

Junk Arm
A trainer that lets you discard 2 cards from your hand to retrieve any 1 Trainer from the discard pile.

Rescue Energy
It provides 1 C Energy and when the Pokémon with Rescue Energy attached gets Knocked Out, the Pokémon returns to the player’s hand. However, we are not sure if it just the very top Pokémon Card, or the whole line. Junk Arm and Rescue Energy will definitely see play in many Gyarados decks.

I did not really want to go in full depth with these cards as they weren’t the main focus of the article. However, if you wish to know more, you can search on Google or leave comments below and I will be happy to answer them. So yes, this long article is finally at an end, and I hope all of you have fun at the prerelease.

ugh… not gonna lie… already tired of seeing Gengar P… sad face…

    • Matthew Tidman  → Rocket

Yeah, your’e probably really going to get tired of it after it comes out and every netdecker out there builds a lost world deck. My question, how popular has Lost World/Gengar (Prime) been in Japan?

      • Ron Routhier  → Matthew

I heard from other posts on other sites and people in my league that Gengar Prime is too popular over there right now, and it is that broken. T-Tar Prime has made a big comeback over there to counter the Gengar epidemic.

I plan on teching Gengar Prime into my VileGar deck. It will be even more successful than it already is…..

        • Joshua Pikka  → Ron

possibly they are going to ban lost world, so thats why they aren’t printing it here

It is a weird card to being with, so Im not that surprised

  2. Alexander Litzler

Hmmmm, I hope that lost zone is not in the set XD though I’m not complaining about it. (I might end up giving the lost zone decks a try if it does) I kinda want Gengar Prime to become popular because then I can put a beat dow to Gengar with my Shiftry/Vileplume deck hehehehe.

  3. Martin Garcia

Nice article, even tough i disagree about the orther or whatever you may call it xD
I think junk arm is by far more important and game changing than machamp prime, and even hunter.
I mean, not only for gyarados, but any deck using trainers gets a benefit to this, not to mention the already broken SP trainer lines (more poketurns, more sprays, etc), you even get more luxury balls, SSU, poke healers/blowers, etc. IMO, this will see a huge play, every deck will try to fit at least 1, if not 2.

    • Peter Bae  → Martin

I may have to agree with you on the fact that it might change the game more than Machamp Prime would. But I believe hunter would change the game more. It gives stage 1 and 2 decks a lot more options. Warping out in to a free retreater, to play hunter to heal, put it all back down with BTS etc. I understand that it does require a lot of cards, but during the mid-late game, your decks thin enough to get the cards you need (and BTS being played in all Gengar/stage 2 decks that will never come off the stadium zone).

      • Ed Mandy  → Peter

Not to mention a new donk option. Your opponent goes first with only 2 basic Pokemon. You bench Crobat G, Seeker (Hunter) it back (returning their bench to their hand), Crobat G again, attack for win.

        • Peter Bae  → Ed

ya, but a lot of the donks rely on that first supported to be a search card like bebe’s IMO xD but hunter is a nice edition when you have that ideal donk hand but your opponent has another pokemon on bench xD

  4. Andrew Adams

Nice overview of the set. Thanks! I’m nervous for all this Lost Zone stuff. Mew could be a good counter to it in some decks, maybe.

  5. Jak Stewart-Armstead

Looks like we might not be getting Lost World . . . which is going to affect #1 and #2 on the list.

    • Peter Bae  → Jak

IMHO i think Gengar Prime is definately still great even tho you dont get the auto win condition anymore with Lost World in the case that Lost World is never out. Gengar Prime sitll has a huge disruption ability with Cast in to the Darkness and has a good spreading option with the 2nd attack, putting 4 dmg counters anyway you like on your opponent’s board, setting up a big compound pain. In the case of Lost World being otu of the set. I can see VileGar teching gengar PRime in to the deck

    • Ron Routhier  → Jak

REALLY?!?! No Lost World?? That would be sweet, because I’m Gengar’d OUT, and I run VileGar for cryin’ out loud. I only want the Lost Zone to knock off SP decks, but I’m not down with Broken Cards. I hope Pokemon doesn’t go the way of Magic the Gathering, where only two or three decks are viable….

    • venny kid  → Jak

So then what happens when Japanese players get to use the card in International tournaments (worlds) and Americans (and others) don’t? It seems a disadvantage to the US, but I’m also not exactly sure how the system works so…

      • Jak Stewart-Armstead  → venny

Worlds always uses the US format. If anything it is a disadvantage to the JPN players.

JPN has always had a different cardpool due to promos etc

  6. Colin Peterik

This is crazy! You don’t even know what cards are in the set yet..

      • Colin Peterik  → Peter

But it directly relates to how good Gengar, Mew, AND Seeker are. You can see how flawed this article becomes..

        • Peter Bae  → Colin

Hunter (seeker/investigator) is defiantely a good card regardless and Gengar Prime is also a good card. Lost World is just a cherry on top. If you use Gengar Prime at the right time, you can put Vital SP Lv.X’s to the lost zone and without lv.xs, SP is useless. Mew is definately better without lost world as your putting your own pokemon in to your lost zone, putting you that much closer to getting lost world-ed

        • Colin Peterik  → Peter

Yeah, you are totally right. Gengar IS still good, and no LW definitely makes Mew epic.

        • Peter Bae  → Colin

I definately can’t wait for this set. It’s about time that a good set came out xD I only started in May, however, I’ve been very mad at the fact that everytime I win a tournament, the packs end up being really bad… at least undaunted was okay

Looking at the setlists for Lost Link and Clash at the Summit, those sets combined had 120 cards. Now, two sets of legend have already been released in the US (Deoxys & Rayquaza; Palkia & Dialga) which means that the total number of cards from those two sets which have yet to be released is 116. Triumphant has 102 (excluding the Lithograph) so there are 16 cards unaccounted for. Confirmed in the set is #85: Blackbelt. Since all trainers in US sets are sorted alphabetically, we can assume this is the first card in the trainers block. The earliest confirmed Prime in the set so far is Celebi (#92), though Absol will probably also be in the set (numbered #91 if things stay the same as normal). This means that there will be 6 T/S/S and Special Energy total in the set. To break it down, here’s a list of all the trainers, supporters, studiums, and special energy from Lost Link and Clash at the Summit:Black Belt (Clash at the Summit)Indigo Plateau (Clash at the Summit)Investigator [Hunter] (Lost Link)Junk Arm (Clash at the Summit)Lost Remover (Lost Link)Lost World (Lost Link)Research Documents (Lost Link)Twins (Clash at the Summit)Rescue Energy (Clash at the Summit)You can see here we have three more cards than there is room for in the set. So it very well means they could drop Lost World, but if they do, what other cards are being dropped? The only one that is confirmed right now is Black Belt.Theory: PokePop responded to a rulings question on the official Pokemon boards today that we needed to wait for the set to come out when discussing a ruling of Gengar Prime vs. Rescue Energy. What if the reason for this is Rescue Energy not being in the American set? Food for thought. That was an incredibly long post. Sorry ’bout that.

      • Peter Bae  → Matthew

Thanks! Great information, and no worries on the length xD Could have written an article about this eh? :P I’ll be kind of sad if Rescue Energy is not in the set :( I couldn’t care less about anythign else, but if they ever touch my rescue energy and possibly junk arm… id be mad xD

      • Kyle Warden  → Matthew

        1. Palkia/Dialga legend comes out in this set.
          Confirmed Primes so far
Celebi, Machamp, Gengar, and Electrode (Yanmega,Absol,Magnezone, and more will fight for the other two slots. This may indicate we might have a 5 HGSS sets.I may also read it wrong and there could actually be 9 in the set)
        • Matthew Tidman  → Kyle

My bad. I meant to write Kyogre & Groudon LEGEND but I wrote Palkia & Dialga. Counting all the primes in both sets there are 8, 5 of which have been confirmed. For reference, I’m using Bulbapedia’s page for the “confirmed” cards http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Triumphant_(TCG). That’s also where I’m getting the setlists from Lost Link and Clash at the Summit from.

Lost World will be in the set. “Battle for the excitement, for the challenge…and for the victory! In the Pokémon Trading Card Game: HS—Triumphant expansion, you’ll find what you need to put triumph within your reach. Dialga and Palkia combine as an incredible Pokémon LEGEND. Machamp, Gengar, and a half-dozen other powerful Pokémon appear for the first time as Pokémon Prime Cards. New Trainer, Supporter, and STADIUM CARDS-plus a new Special Energy card-give you new strategies and deck ideas. The only thing missing is a Trainer who battles to win…and that’s you!

With more than 100 cards, the brand-new Pokémon TCG: HS—Triumphant expansion is perfect for beginner and intermediate Pokémon TCG players of all ages! Packaged with a holographic treatment, two theme decks—each including one guaranteed foil card—will arrive in stores nationwide on November 3, 2010!”
Being plural and there being only 2 Stadiums from these two sets combined makes me feel as though we are getting Lost World, although I guess they could just find some other Stadium but I can’t see from where.

    • Matthew Tidman  → joe

It’s a collective plural. It’s saying that there will be new T/S/S cards. It doesn’t explicitly state there will be new Trainer cards, Supporter Cards, and Stadium cards (all plural) . It also doesn’t say there won’t be multiple stadium cards. We’ll just have to wait for prerelease reports to come in to see.

      • Peter Bae  → Matthew

Lost World is a love and hate thing for me xD. I believe Gengar Prime is still a very good card and can be used as a tech in VileGar for disruption and easy spread set up with Gengar X. If Lost World doesnt come out, the format would be much more diverse which I love and if Lost World does come out, there might be a Gengar Epidemic resulting a format where it owuld just be Gengar vs. Gengar Counters

        • Matthew Tidman  → Peter

My only problem with Gengar Prime in a VileGar deck is that with mine I only run 4 Psychic Energy meaning the removal aspect of the card is very limited for me. Still, I do run Gengar Lv.X as a Dialga counter, and I was thinking about teching in a Curse Gengar for better spread. It has serious potential for major disruption, and removing the Dialga G Lv.X before your opponent can play it would be a godsend for giving the deck a bit more consistency.

    • Colin Peterik  → joe

Sorry. Lost World is not in the set. Unless it is a ridiculously rare secret rare card, more rare than Time Space Distortion.

  8. Travis Yeary

sigh every Gengar they make is more broken, game changing, and frankly ANNOYING than the last one. They need to stop making Gengars until all the ones that are already out go away. I can’t tell you how many games I’ve lost to a coin flip because of freaking “fainting spell”. My opponent never gets heads on that unless I really really really need them to get tails, or I loose the game.

      • Matthew Tidman  → chrataxe

I disagree, it takes a small amount of skill. If nothing else you have to know when to retreat it so your opponent doesn’t activate Fainting Spell at the wrong time, and you have to know how to allocate your damage effectively for the maximum number of KO before it’s taken down.

Still, you’re right, it’s a pretty powerful card that anyone can “button-mash” to get easy KOs.

I think this new expansion brings stage 2/1 decks to new heights.
Think about it, theres rescue energy + bts to recover things next turn, even faster than sp cause they need another turn for levelling up or another card of the same pokemon alrdy.
Then theres, the new putting into lost zone attk from gengar, which means sps which loses their lvelx, or basic are more affected than the thick 4-2-3 lines of a stage 2, or 4-4 of donphan.
The black belt and twins both give non-sp decks the edge as they need to have more prizes, which is often not the case for the speedy sp, plus these cards compete directly with cyrus conspiracy for the supporter turn per turn, unlike non-sp decks.
Well, the new junk arm may help both decks, so cant really say much about it.

And we have this exciting expansion coming soon…
(wonder why nobody mentions grumpig anymore ..heh heh psychic lock)

  10. Marcel Mravec

Do you think it is possible to place 4 magicarps into discard and place gyarados to Lost Zone by Mew and let Mew attack for 120 for no energy? 4 mew primes, 2 gdos, 4 magikarps – 140 dmg with belt, but only 80 hp ;-)

    • Peter Bae  → Marcel

i think mew could be a good tech in Gyarados as now they can go 4-4, 4th one for mew in a tight spot xD but remember that Mew has to survive at active spot for a turn unless Gyarados is already in lost zone by Gengar Prime

    • Peter Bae  → Marcel

That sounds so sick, it’s AWESOME!!!! I would love to see somebody pull that off, just not against me…LOL

    • Peter Bae  → Gabriel

except the 60 HP, and the addition of psychic energy and having to stay active for a turnn (if your using Mew’s attack to send gyarados to the lost zone) will be ridiculously hard. i’d tech this if i find myself facing like lostgar a lot

  11. Ron Routhier

I think Gengar Prime will be an awesome tech with VileGar. I’ve been running VileGar with great success since it came out, and can’t wait to send Garchomp X and Luxray X to the lost zone, with or without Lost World. I actually hope they don’t release Lost World, because the card is TOO BROKEN as it is. I at least want to see variety in the decks, not pure Lost World all the time. I think with Gengar getting even more popular now, T-Tar will see a huge comeback, even here in the states. This will mean more Tier-1 decks in the format instead of SP all the time.

  12. Peter Bae

Also Guys! I completely forgot to talk about one card!! Ditto! 40 HP, colorless, x2 fightining weakness, 1 retreat, has a great poke-body “dittobolic” which limits your opponents bench to 4, and if they have a 5, they have to discard them with all cards attached xD will definately see play

  13. Peter Bae

Unfortunately, Lost World is not in the set, which means that Lost World shouldnt be included in this article xD

  14. Leo Sha

I’m guessing there is NO Lost world in triumphant (unless it is rarer than alph lithographs, that is) because I asked around at a pre-release I went to today and NOBODY had a lost world.

    • thomas clip  → Leo

Same here. I pulled a Gengar Prime and full Dialga Palkia Legend, but nobody got a Lost World. :(

  15. Alex Pike

Just thought I’d point out that Pokegym now has the full set list with scans in the gallery for you guys to pour over :D
