Card of the Day – Magnezone Prime (Triumphant TM 96)

pokegym.netToday, I decided I would take a look a new Triumphant card, Magnezone Prime. Magnezone Prime is a Stage 2 Pokémon with 140 HP that comes from the unimpressive Magnemite/Magneton line. Magnezone is a Lightning Pokémon, meaning it can hit Kingdra Prime and Gyarados for weakness. The x2 Fighting Weakness, like I’ve said before, is pretty bad, meaning Machamp SF, Promocroak, Donphan and Machamp Prime all hit you for a lot more damage. The -20 Metal Resistance is great, giving you some survivability against Steelix, Scizor and Dialga G LV.X. Finally, the three Retreat Cost sucks.

Its Poké-Power “Magnetic Draw” is, well I’ll be blunt, amazing. It states that, once during your turn, you may draw until you have 6 cards in your hand. When you’re reading this card, no one will blame you if you start to cry and say “Darn you Claydol!” Despite losing the ability to send up to two cards to the bottom of your deck as well as this being a Stage 2, this is still a glorious Poké-Power.

“Lost Burn”, its sole attack, for LC, lets you put as many Energy cards attached to all of your Pokémon as you like in the Lost Zone. The attack then dishes out 50 damage for each Energy put in your Lost Zone in this way. Well, this is a great attack, being able to staggering amounts of damage.

When I read this attack, I think of a few aspects of “Lost Burn” that really make it stand out in my mind. Firstly, you can add damage by removing Energy that are attached to ANY of your Pokémon, not just Magnezone Prime. This allows you to never need to devote more than two Energy to Magnezone Prime, allowing you to use your resources on other Pokémon without fear of running out of fuel for “Lost Burn”. Secondly, you can almost always ensure a 1HKO, granted you have enough Energy for it. If you’re up against an Absol G LV.X, remove two Energy. If Machamp SF is causing you problems, send three to the grinder.

Magnezone Prime is an amazing (I know, I’ve overused the word, but amazing is the best word to describe it) card that acts as both an accelerator and 1HKO machine.

My Recommendation: I think that this will be another great deck to use for cities, combo it with the other useful Magnezone’s to make a very consistent, fun deck. I know that Magnezone will see play at cities, so I strongly suggest that you learn how to play against it.

My Rating: 4.25/5

Oh god this card is SOOOOO UNDERATED! People think its too slow… Its only one stage higher than claydol and its not hard to set up at all. It speeds stuff up more than it slows is. Not being able to cycle isnt a big deal, drawing until you have when ever you want is awesome! Plus it’s attack is amazing if you want to take out a high HP pokemon fast.

I don’t know how well it works as an engine in any deck, but I do agree that its attack is amazing and its Poke-Power is off the charts in Magnezone/X or straight Magnezone decks.

It works great. My friend teched a line into donphan machamp and also with a regice tech he could discard 2 and then draw for more every turn. Its no claydol but its the closest we’ve got.

If you MUST have cycling with it, pair with Banatte PL. But seriously, this is a GOOD card. Not as good IMO as Ninetails HGSS when in Charizard, but still pretty awesome.

While I’ll admit it’s no Claydol, it’s still SUPER AWESOME!!!!!

Great insight! I wrote an an article about Magnezone and absolutely love it! I didn’t think Prime was going to be that good, but I was wrong. It works really well.

In play testing, I’ve found a few cards that work great with it. The first is Blissey PL which lets you discard and heal. This helps get rid of junk cards in your hand or let’s you throw a lightning or metal energy into the discard pile to pull out with Switch Magnezone. This also gives more draw power with Prime.

I also like Expert Belt as having the 2 energy lost burn damage + 20 expert belt can KO most SP cards, and getting 2 energy a turn on Prime is very doable with Switch Magnezone in play and Blissey PL.

Like someone else noted below, Judge is also an excellent addition with Prime. It refreshes your hand, usually reduces your opponents hand, and gives you the opportunity to draw 2 or more cards with Prime.

Another tech I love right now is Lucario GL since Gyarados is so prevalent. With an expert belt, you only have to Lost Zone 1 energy to deal out 70 x 2 = 140 to KO Gyarados. Or, you can use switch magnezone with expert belt to OHKO Gyarados and keep a trainer lock on with Spiritomb.

Definitely a cool card- I give it a 4.5 or better. Thanks for writing this!

Hmm, MagneGatr is definitely the way to go with this astounding card – wouldn’t be surprised if this hits Oslo city championship pretty hard… This of course highly bases itself on the use of the unsearchable “rare candy”, which gives the card Junk Arm an excellent opportunity to do its thing, especially as this combines nicely with the prime’s pokepower:)
