Card of the Day – Aerodactyl (Majestic Dawn MD 15)

Hello 6P. It’s me, Genguy. Before I begin this review, I’d like to apologize for my last sub par COTD. I am still learning and developing my skills as a writer, Pokémon player, and Front Page Contributor. I am very grateful for the positive comments, as well as the negative comments, because they allow me to hone my skills to produce better quality articles. I thank you all for tolerating that last COTD and I promise you they will be getting better.

Back on earth…

pokemon-paradijs.comFor your COTD, I will be reviewing Aerodactyl from the Majestic Dawn expansion. Aerodactyl MD has always been an interesting card. It can utilize the fossil engine quite effectively and is a Stage 1 Pokémon, allowing cards, such as Broken Time-Space, to be used alongside it. Its attack requires only a Double Colorless Energy, allowing a turn 1 Aerodactyl possible.

Aerodactyl MD’s Poké-Body, “Primal Claw”, states that after one of your opponent’s Pokémon uses a Poké-Power, you put 2 damage counters on that Pokémon. This means that you will be spreading damage all around the board as Poké-Powers are present in every deck, barring Scizor/Cherrim. The best part about this is that it is stackable, meaning that, if you have 4 Aerodactyl MD in play, the Pokémon using the Poké-Power will take 80 Damage.

I seem to remember 3 Pokémon that each have 70 HP and a Poké-Power: Uxie LA, Azelf LA, and Mesprit LA. Uxie and Azelf are present in nearly every single deck, with Mesprit being in 20% of decks. Each of these Pokémon has a Poké-Power that can be used when played from the hand. Should you have 4 Aerodactyl MD in play, if your opponent uses a “Set Up”, “Time Walk”, or “Psychic Bind”, it will put them behind on prizes.

However, it all goes downhill from there. 80 HP and a +20 weakness to Lightning puts you perfectly within KO range by Luxray GL LV.X’s “Flash Impact”. 1 Retreat Cost is very reasonable for a Flying Pokémon made out of stone, and resistance to Fighting is okay. Aerodactyl MD’s attack for DCE does 30 damage and has a 50% chance of confusion.

Aerodactyl MD is a very interesting card. I don’t think that many competitive decks would use it but It would make a very fun rogue deck, maybe partnered with Garchomp C LV.X to snipe the Pokémon without a Poké-Power.

My rating: 2.7/5

i’d rate it as a 1.5 because even though its a neat pokebody it cant really go far unless it’s stacked to 4. also a big of constructive criticism. you didnt even review his attack. even though its not good you still need to touch on it a bit.

It’s good to see that someone else has found Aerodactyl. :) Aerodactyl could definitely see competitive play, maybe not in a deck on it’s own, but either in a paired deck or a tech. It’s definitely worth trying out, as Poke-Powers pretty much run the game (Luxray GL Lv.X, Garchomp C Lv.X, Gengar, Gengar Lv.X, Ninetails, Regice, AMU, Crobat G, etc.).

Pretty much useless in SP… Most Poke-Power using Poke-mon this format have 80 or 90 hp. Either way yo uwill have to Dragon Rush to knock it out. Unless you have all 4 set up in 1 turn :P than it would shut down all the Pixies :P

If you could get four out, it would be nice. However the 80 HP (Garchomp C bait), +20 Lightning Weakness (Luxray GL Bait), and Dialga G Lv.X shuts it off, so I don’t like it.

Not to menchan it evolve from a fossil for it is hard to search out and Spiritomb and Vileplume shut it down… I have tried it before with Gengar and it just wouldn’t work because of the fossil think…. made it to hard to get out early when you needed it. Great card though and nice article!

Neat card to highlight. I could see using this as a tech in T-Tar (or any spread deck), especially against Gyarados; it would definitely make Crobat drops, Azelf & Uxie more risky, knowing that Darkness Howl will take out the bench that much faster.

In that way, I think running 1 Aerodactyl might actually be more effective than running 4. I mean, if you want to stop your opponent from using Powers altogether, why not just run Mesprit and lots of Seeker/SSU? I think the better plan is to run 1 or 2, make your opponent decide to accept the hit on Regice, and then punish him/her for it.

Why would it be dangerous to make Crobat Drops? your just gonna pick it back up with Poke-Turn, eternally putting 20 on it. Even that’s not a big deal because Spread isn’t huge this format. With the -20 health, it will still require a DRagon Rush to knock it out so it won’t really matter if aerodactyl was on the field. I like the card, but it just doesnt work xD

You are right when you say you see very few spread decks now. But, I know I’m not the only player that runs Tyranitar/Umbreon. When I have, 30-40% of my recent matches have been against Gyarados. I find my Gyarados opponents don’t always have a Poke-Turn (or a Junk Arm to get a Poke-Turn) in hand when they want to drop a Crobat, but they do it anyway, presumably because they think they might draw into it in the next few turns. Against me, they know they have at least 4 turns to get it out of there. But every Aerodactyl I run would mean 1 fewer turn of life for that Crobat, and everything else (sprites etc.). I have gotten multiple prizes mid-game by Darkness Howling sprites & Regice off the bench before, but not often, because it takes 4 turns. This would make it easier.

You are absolutely right–Aerodactyl would make no sense as a tech for an SP deck or against an SP deck. If I had this as a 1-1 tech in my T-Tar deck and I was up against SP, I wouldn’t play it. It also probably wouldn’t work as a Gyarados mirror tech–even though it damages your opponent’s bench, Gyarados only sometimes runs good ways of dragging purple pokes to the active. I think I was pretty clear what deck(s) I thought it might be useful for. You don’t run those decks, fine–feel free to ignore my post.

Does it stack? (If say I had 4 out, would any “Set Up” from my opponent KO Uxie?)

I’ve tried it….I’ve failed….still fun to mess around with though.

One interesting combo is with Ampharos PL. Any power not done on dropping the card is useless after one go. I played against it, and it wrecked my blastgatr deck.
