Never fear, adoring fans, I am back. All apologies for not submitting more content in the past few weeks, the Holiday season is not only one of my busiest and most stressful times personally, but as I work in the shipping industry, it’s also pretty hectic on that front as well. Unfortunately I haven’t got a whole lot of relevant info for you today, but I do have some new years resolutions to share, as well as some random thoughts. Enjoy!
Firstly, I figured it would only be right to ring in the New Year with a couple of New Years resolutions. Mind you, these are only Pokémon-related resolutions, so I’ll spare you the “lose weight fatty” and “read books dummy” that these lists usually entail.
Build SixPrizes and other communities
Probably my biggest Pokémon-related resolution this year is to be more active in the direct growth and prosperity of SixPrizes and other communities that I’m apart of. I’d like to think I do a pretty good job of promoting 6p already, as I wear my 6p shirt at every event I attend, and will go on and on about the greatness of this site given the slightest bit of anyone’s attention.
Still, I feel like 6p is still under-appreciated by a large section of the community, and this year I’m going to work my hardest to change that.
Another site that I’ve never really taken the time to be involved in, but that I think is a fantastic resource is Poképedia.net. Ryan Vergel already wrote a great piece on it that you should go and read now, so I won’t rehash anything that’s already been said.
What I will say, however, is that Poképedia is an even MORE underrated resource/website than 6p is, and that’s a darn shame. Without t-shirts I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to promote Poképedia, as it’s kind of a difficult concept to explain on the fly, but I’m sure I’ll figure something out.
And then of course there is the motherland, HeyTrainer.org, but with the explosion in popularity of that site in recent months I don’t think it really needs my help in succeeding. :D
Win more events
“If only it were that easy”
I know this resolution is kind of silly, but all I mean by it is that I want to start pushing myself to take first place more. Too often I get comfortable with top eight, four, or two, that I forget that I could very well win the tournament if my keep my head in the right place.
Obviously this is easier said than done and there’s quite a few situations where I’ve simply been bested on a skill level, but that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t stop going for the ultimate goal whenever possible.
Grow my local league more
For those of you who don’t know, I run a league at the best store in the universe, Olympic Cards & Comics in Lacey, WA. We hold league on Sundays from noon to 6 PM, and generally it’s pretty awesome. However, it’s sometimes difficult between tournaments (especially Cities, being nearly ever weekend and all), and real life occurrences to attend every week, and put my all into when I do.
Don’t get me wrong, we consistently have league every week except for Cities/other major tournaments, but sometimes I feel like the stretches where we don’t have league really hurt the non-tournament attending playerbase.
Anyway, as I’m sure this is something that very few of you actually care about, I’ll digress.
Grow my team more
I know some players find it lame, but I’m a huge believer in the team dynamic in single-player games. I think that testing with a team and having people to bounce ideas off of, as well as just having people to hang out with at events and feel a sense of community with is HUGE.
I formed Team B-Side last year and although it’s been a success, I’d really like to start improving our consistency as players and friends. I’d love to organize more testing sessions and really just brew more as a team in general.
Sometime soon I’ll be writing a bigger article about the team dyanmic and how I feel it affects success, so I’ll leave you with that little bit of info for now.
That’s about all the resolutions I’ve got for today. I know it’s a little late, but what are yours? Feel free to share both Pokémon and non-Pokémon related resolutions in the comments!
Just gonna throw out a few rapid fire, stream of consciousness bullet points here, just based on what I’ve been thinking about and chatting with other players about lately. Randomness ahead!
pokebeach.comThere’s really no point. Let’s say that you need a playset, okay? They’re holding steady at $15 on eBay at the moment. So you go and buy your $60 playset, and come to find out, Lost World isn’t in the set~! That’s $60 you’ll never get back, as Gengars price is destined to fall if it’s confirmed that Lost World won’t be making it’s way anywhere but Japan.
Now, think about your alternative, you wait until Lost World comes out, and maybe you pay $20 per Gengar, maybe even $25, but at least you have the peace of mind that your investment is actually going to pan out.
Or maybe you’ve just got money to blow and don’t care if it’s a poor investment. In which case, more power to you!
2. Aren’t those Dialga/Palkia boxes such a great deal?
I mean, a Dialga G LV.X, a Palkia G LV.X, 4 relevant packs, and a cool decoration for $15? That’s madness. I’m not sure why more people aren’t going nuts about these. This is the best product Pokémon has put out since Garchomp tins. If you can find them for even $20 in your area, I highly suggest you pick one up. I bought one, and I already had 5 each of Dialga and Palkia.
Why did I do this, you ask?
Well, firstly, because I like wasting my money and I like opening packs. Sue me. Secondly, though, I want to encourage Pokémon to print more things like this in the future. Who knows, maybe if this sells well we’ll be getting Gengar Primes packaged with foil versions of Lost World for $10 in the near future. Vote with your wallet etc.
Oh, and don’t buy that Darkrai/Cresellia one. Dreadful.
3. Speaking of all this financial talk, why isn’t there a dedicated financial writer or two for Pokémon?
Jonathan Medina, one of my favorite MTG writers, writes nearly exclusively about the financial side of Magic, and he’s insanely successful. I understand that Pokémon doesn’t have at much as stake, and often doesn’t have as expensive of cards as Magic, but it’s still got to be worth someones time to write about this kind of thing, right? If you think that person is you, I urge you to submit something to 6p! Definitely a niche that needs filling.
4. I successfully foiled out my LuxChomp deck for the 2011 season.
5. Now that the GA Marathon is over, I’m really interested in seeing what it’s done to a few players rankings.
Too bad rankings are down for what seems like the forseeable future. Speaking of rankings, my “friend” David Cohen is at 1800+. eighteen hundred. That is ridiculousness on levels I’ve never quite seen before.
Soo, that’s all I’ve got for the random musings. Sorry so many of them were about finances, I didn’t really think about that going into it. Hope reading them wasn’t too painful for you!
I guess I should catch you up on how I’ve been doing in tournaments, eh? Well, after I took 1st Place at the Spanaway, WA City Championship, I scrubbed out at 4-2 in my home shop, Olympic Cards & Comics in Lacey, WA. Luckily my boy Andrew stole that win from David Cohen, so all was right in the world.
We took a week off for Christmas, and then I proceeded to scrub out at 3-2 at both of the events on New Year weekend. Part of it was luck (donked twice, and had a completely dead hand once), and part of it was that I just didn’t prepare enough. I ended up losing 3 points on the weekend which hurt, but hopefully with my deck re-tuned and my mind in the right place I’ll be able to pick up a win or two during this weekend, the last weekend of Cities for me.
Lastly, because I know you want it, here’s the decklist that I’ll hopefully win a tournament with this weekend (or last weekend, depending on when this gets published. Either way I mean the weekend of the 8th)…
