PokémonPlayer101’s States Report!!!

Hey guys! It’s Dane, better known to SixPrizes as PokémonPlayer101, and I’m here with a brand-new States report!!!

First off, I would like to thank Adam, for letteing be a Front Page Contributor, something that I have been striving for since I found SixPrizes. I would also like to throw a shout-out to Steven Toman for introducing me to competitive play, which is now one of my favorite things — ever. But let’s get on to the report.

March 12, 2011: Trent and I got up at 4:30 in the morning, got dressed, had breakfast, and left for States by 5:00.

We got there at the Queen Mary at about 7:30, and had just enough time to lose 2 Machamp Prime; that wasn’t even ours. Trent ended up having to buy 2 more. :P

Here’s the deck I brought:

Pokémon – 23

3 Gyarados SF
4 Magikarp SF
1 Chansey PL
1 Blissey Prime
4 Sableye SF
2 Uxie LA
2 Crobat G PL
1 Regice LA
1 Mesprit LA
1 Azelf LA
1 Combee SF
1 Smeargle UD
1 Unown Q MD

Trainers – 30

2 Bebe’s Search
3 Pokémon Collector
2 Seeker
3 Broken Time-Space
3 Expert Belt
4 Poké Drawer +
4 Super Scoop Up
3 Pokémon Rescue
3 Poké Turn
3 Junk Arm

Energy – 7

2 Rescue
2 Cyclone
3 Warp

It’s the most normal decklist I have ever brought to a tournament.

Why I Used These Cards

Blissey Prime: It has helped me win many games before, when I don’t have my Rescue Energy, or when I’m Trainer-Locked, and can’t use SSU.

Poké Drawer +: An addition made by my friend Steve, this card was the only reason I won Round 2 here during States. Read on to find out why.

3 Pokémon Collector: I know, I know, you’re probably saying “USE FOUR!!!!”, but, hey. At least it’s better than the 2 I was originally going to run.

THE EVENT

After filling out our decklists, we found out that there was going to be 6 rounds, with a Top Cut of 8. Yikes! I knew that if I wanted to make Top Cut, I was going to have to play perfectly. . . uh-oh.

ROUND 1: vs. E.J. (Donphan Prime/Drapion/Machamp Prime)

This round ended within 30 seconds. I start Magikarp, EJ starts Skorupi (TM). I go first, and Sea Spray for nothing. He draws, attaches DCE, and uses Paralyzing Clamp, flips heads, and donks. Donks with a FREAKIN’ SKORUPI!!!!!! HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN!?!?!?!?

0-1

ROUND 2: vs. Mason (Gyarados)

This round also ends with a donk, but I’m them one who does so. He starts Combee, while I strategically put Unown Q as my acctive with Regice on the bench (don’t want Regice to be stuck!). He draws, and passes.

I topdeck a Gyarados, use double Poké Drawer for a BTS and Pokémon Collector, use Pokémon Collector for 3 Magikarp, Regi Move 2 of them, drop the third, BTS, Gyarados, retreat Q, and Tail Revenge for the win.

Sorry! I offer him another games, but he said no. Oh well. Good luck, Mason!

1-1

ROUND 3: vs. Javier (Sablelock)

pokebeach.comWow, this was sad. He starts Sableye against my ??? start (sorry… blurry memory. I lost my notes as well.) He attaches a Special Dark, and Overconfident’s for the Knock Out. I bring up Sableye and start setting up. He draws, Flash Bites my Sableye, and uses Overconfident for another Knock Out.

Then, I bring up another Sableye and I start to try and set up again. He retreats Sableye, and brings up his teched-in Froslass GL, and uses Sleep Inducer to bring up my Regice. I roll heads and wake up, but I keep drawing crap, while he keeps sniping my bench with Garchomp C LV.X.

Javier ends up taking 6 straight prizes, while I take a pathetic 0. He offers to take a look at and help me with my deck, but I say “Not right now, but after we see who makes Top Cut,” since I don’t want him to know my deck if we both end up making Top Cut.

1-2

ROUND 4: vs. James (DialgaChomp)

I start Sableye to his Dialga G (I think), and we both get off to really good starts. I got a Turn 2 Gyarados out, while he got a Turn 2 Dialga G LV.X out. He Second Strike’s my Sableye out (it already had 10 from Deafen), and I bring up Gyarados to do 60 (or 90… another blurry moment), and he’s left to Remove Lost on my G-Dos.

Next turn, I Knock it Out. He brings up his Toxitank while he builds up his Garchomp C on the bench. I heal the damage off me with SSU (and BTS), and then KO the Toxicroak. He brings up Garchomp C and Dragon Rushes my bench (I forget which one, but he got a prize out of it).

By then, he’s wasted most of his resources, so I’m able to Tail Revenge his Garchomp for the game. Thanks for the close game, James!

2-2

ROUND 5: vs. Betty(?) (Gyarados’s worst nightmare a.k.a. Magnezone/Regirock)

pokemon-paradijs.com

First off, sorry if I got your name wrong! Now to the battle. I start Sableye to her Magnemite, and I set up pretty quickly with a Turn 3 Gyarados. But she also sets up quickly, and I make the mistake of Belting my Gyarados. I don’t realize that I made a misplay until after she Knocks Out two Belted Gyarados’s.

During this battle, I ended up having to have a Judge come over to the table, as I used Seeker and forgot to pick up a Pokémon, but it was already her turn. That burned me the most as if I had picked up my benched Mesprit and locked her powers again, she wouldn’t have gotten her quick set up.

We ended up going into the “+3” part of “30+3”, and I just end up scooping, as I have 5 Prizes left, while she has 2. Good(-ish) game!

2-3

ROUND 6: vs. Brian (or Byron… they were identical twins, so I didn’t know) (Grass… it had Shaymin and Yanmega [SV] in it)

I start ??? to his Yanma (WHY DID I LOSE MY NOTES!!!! :P)and he goes first, draws, drops Shaymin, attaches, and passes. I draw and use double Poké Drawer + for Poké Drawer + and Gyarados. I Junk Arm one of my Poké Drawer + out of the discard to use another double set of Poké Drawer +.

I ended up with a T1 Gyarados with 2 Magikarp in the discard pile, and I 1HKO his Yanma. He draws, drops a Yanma, and uses Flower Aroma. I hit for 40 because of Shaymin’s Resistance.

This goes on for a while, so I’ll just sum it up to this: he eventually got a Shaymin LV.X out, and I eventually get a third ‘Karp in the Discard, so I took half my Prize cards when I won.

3-3

So I ended up with a 3-3 in 23rd Place. Not the best record, but much better than my 2-4 at my 1st tournament, the 2010 States, and one of those 2 battles I won last States was because of a Bye.

Pros:

pokebeach.comI used a normal deck for once

2 Sets of double Poké Drawer + in one game

Gyarados donked

I got the best 3-3 record out of all of my friends (who, coincidentally, all got 3-3)

Pulled 3 Shiftry RR in 2 booster packs; 2 Holo, 1 Reverse Holo

My friend Sam beat a Bieberlicious Belieber (someone who was obsessed with Justin Beaver– I mean Justin Bieber)

Cons:

23rd Place

Made 3 misplays in 1 game; unfortunately, it was the Magnezone match

I lost my notes

I forgot peoples names

Had to leave at 4:00

GOT DONKED BY A SKORUPI!!!

DIDN’T MAKE TOP CUT!!! :(

OK guys. I’ll talk to you later, both for deck analyses and a Regionals report. See ya!

I want a sitcom starring Brian and Byron.

    Would be pretty sweet.

I was there, you didn’t stay for all 8 rounds? It was my first States ever and I went 5 -3 with VileGar with Froslass GL tech. My girlfriend was bummed she couldn’t watch and I was pretty tired after the 8th round and left since I lost my last round and was only #32 in standings.

Not a bad report. I personally would prefer hearing your thoughts on some of your plays rather then a play-by-play, if that makes sense.
    Also, MY PRIIIMES. cries
