What to Expect, My Week 1 Picks, and Quick Tips for Cities Success “In no particular order, here is a list of decks that I expect to see the most of come Week 1: Night March Vespiquen Tyrantrum/Bronzong Magnezone/Raikou M Manectric/Regice Mienshao The XY-on rotation is still relatively fresh, and consequently we’re sure to see a lot of variance. However, right off the bat, I expect that we will see a lot of Night March, Vespiquen, and Tyrantrum. Night March and Vespiquen are always crowd favorites, as they are cheap to build and relatively easy to play. Tyrantrum on the other hand is a little more difficult to pilot, but people will likely…
Starting Grounds for Standard Cities, BREAKthrough Favorites, and Adapting Regionals Winners for Expanded Cities “As far as the Standard format goes, we don’t know a whole lot about what will be popular, as there has not been a major tournament with the format yet. However, I see Yveltal/Crobat being a serious contender. This is because of the introduction of the new Supporter card, Brigette. The ability to search for 3 Zubats makes setting up Crobats very consistent and much more reasonable. 4 Yveltal XY, 3 Yveltal-EX, 4-4-3 Crobat PHF We max out Baby Yveltal because of the lack of Dark Patch in the Standard format. We want to be able to set up Yveltal-EX…
Fall Regionals Metagame Guide, My Top Two, and Standard Solutions “Here’s a list of every deck you should be prepared to play against at Regionals, in alphabetical order. Some will be more popular than others, of course, so I will put them into a tier list afterwards. Donphan Durant/Ninjask Groudon M Manectric/Regice Metal/M Rayquaza Night March/Archeops Seismitoad/Giratina Speed M Rayquaza Vesipquen/Accelgor Vespiquen/Flareon Yveltal/Archeops Yveltal/Garbodor As you can see, that is quite a hefty list of decks. The format is sure to be wide open, particularly heading into the first weekend of Regionals. I’ll now lay out what I believe to be an accurate tier list for this mess of decks.…
Dylan’s 14th Place 2015 World Championship Report “Heading into Worlds, I expected the event to be filled with decks like Groudon, Manectric, Seismitoad variants, and Metal decks. This is what lead me to test Groudon/Garbodor and Virizion/Genesect the most. However, upon arriving at my team’s testing session the Monday before Worlds, we discussed the potential rise of and hype surrounding decks like Night March and Hippowdon. We decided if this was to be the case, our best chances for success would be to play a Night March list with an edge in the mirror match. We spent the rest of the week playtesting, and by Thursday night, this…
My Top 2 Picks for Worlds, A Few Final Tips, and Old Dogs, New Tricks “After a lot of testing and thought, I’ve settled down these two following decks. I preface this with my belief that the metagame will consist mostly of Seismitoad, Manectric, and Metal decks. I don’t expect to see very many speedy non-EX decks at the event either. 3-3 Primal Groudon-EX, 1 Landorus-EX The 3 copies of both the Primal and normal Groudon-EX are pretty standard. Occasionally we see a 2-2 line, but I believe 3 of each is a necessity, as prizing even 1 of either card could be crippling. Landorus-EX is a nice way to handle Raichu XY. Since Raichu is…

10 Plays for Worlds and Initial Favorites from Ancient Origins “This is the exact list that Jason Klaczynski used to take down the US National Championship. I believe this list is actually near perfect, and I can’t see myself changing a single card right now. Things that come to mind are the inclusion of the 4th VS Seeker and maybe a copy of Mewtwo-EX, but I’m not sure what I would cut to fit those in. I think this deck will continue to be a strong play as we approach Worlds. Its ability to be aggressive as well as lock the opponent out of their options is unmatched in my…
Thoughts on the LTC Ban, Week 3 Deck Diagnoses, and Starting Points for Nationals “On Monday, June 1, we received news that Lysandre’s Trump Card would be removed from competitive TCG tournament play. The community has expressed mixed feelings about the banning of this short-lived card, but it seems that many are starting to see that it was the correct decision for the integrity of the game. Other writers have already done a good job of going over why Trump Card was banned, but here are a few quick thoughts to keep in mind moving into the new Trump-less format. 1. Seismitoad-EX decks will likely see a complete overhaul We all know the power…
VA States Top 8 Report, My Top 3 Picks for Spring Regionals, and Favorites from Roaring Skies “State Championships are always somewhat of a struggle for me. They take place during a busy time of the school year, and with only one week between each event, there is little time to test. This generally makes for situations where deck choices are made mostly on theory … which don’t always work out. Virginia States took place on the fourth weekend of the States cycle this year. Leading into the event, I wasn’t too sure what the best play would be. In Maryland the week prior, I played a Donphan deck to a disappointing 4-2-1 finish. Both of my losses…
1st Seed Recap, Favorites from Florida, No-Shows, and Expanded Experimentations “3 Seismitoad-EX As I said above, I predicted going into the weekend that the two most popular decks would be Landorus/Crobat and Night March. Seismitoad is an excellent card in both matchups. Against Landorus/Bats, establishing a Quaking Punch lock with Garbodor’s Garbotoxin active really hinders the opponent’s strategy. Without the extra damage from Golbat and Crobat, the deck becomes pretty lackluster. Against Night March, you can use Lysandre’s Trump Card once the opponent builds up some Night March Pokemon in the discard. Follow that up with a Quaking Punch and your opponent will be left scrambling to discard their Night…
Reflections on Twenty Cities and Pre-Regionals Deck Diagnoses “An Explosive Start Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop A Change of Pace Journey Through Georgia An Expanded Experience Post-Cities Deck Diagnoses Primal Clash Favorites Conclusion Directly following Thanksgiving, Pennsylvania always holds a three-day “mini-marathon” of Cities. I was able to attend all three and found some kind of success at each of them.
