How to Have Success at a Series of Cities “The Georgia Marathon during the 2013-2014 season was my first one ever. I had no idea what to expect, which made the entire trip that much more captivating. I did, however, have a decent amount of prior experience with the format. Prior to driving down to Newnan, GA for my first tournament of the 10-event chain, I had attended two City Championships and was lucky enough to place into the finals of both of them. I had experience with a changing metagame, but the timeline was from one weekend to the next — much different from day to day. Unlike…

The Beginnings of Eelektrik and the HS-NVI Format “However, Eel decks weren’t without their weaknesses. Alongside Donphan Prime, Terrakion NVI was birthed in the same set. An effective foil to our electric hero, Terrakion NVI provided quick, effective, and at times, blindsiding answers to most of the main attackers that became partners for Eelektrik. Zekrom BLW, Magnezone Prime, and Lanturn Prime, all bit the dust in one hit from Terrakion. One particularly familiar (and fun) deck that could pose a threat to Magnezone was based on Electrode Prime and multiple different attackers like Terrakion. There have been other Electrode cards in the past that could blow up for…
Interview with 2014 Philadelphia Regional Champion Ryan Sabelhaus “I had the pleasure of traveling to Philadelphia this past weekend with some great friends. Among those present in our small hatchback was none other than Mr. Ryan Sabelhaus. Ever since last summer when I moved to Greenville, South Carolina, I have become great friends with the Sabelhaus brothers. I have learned more from them about this game than I even knew there was to know. Out of anyone I could have met down here, I could not ask for better friends and mentors. Both of them are perpetually successful in this game, and it has definitely shown with last weekend…
Humble Beginnings and Onward to Flashfire “This season started off with my college graduation over last summer. I received my bachelor’s degree in computer science from UNC Charlotte in July, and was fortunate enough to be offered a job opportunity in Greenville, SC shortly after. The icing on the cake was that I was now literally right down the road from two of my best friends, Kyle and Ryan Sabelhaus. I knew as far as my TCG career went that this was a huge step to take in order to improve my game. I had played the previous season somewhat competitively, but never making a huge…
The New Set’s Impact on Not-So-New Decks “Darkrai and Garbodor have been a cute couple ever since the very beginning of this season when it won the Klaczynski Open, and remained a threat at our Winter Regionals when it won in Virginia. Everyone knows by now why this deck is good – Ability denial with Garbodor, the reuse of powerful Items with Junk Hunt, and the eventual overrun with Darkrai. However, many people were deterred from playing Darkrai/Garbodor in the past due to its naturally slow pace of play within the 50-minute round limit. The most important question to answer about this deck going into the new…

Plasma in a Post-Catcher World “Pokemon Catcher was the last piece of the puzzle for Plasma. Even as it stands now, it has the best non-EX attacker in the game in Kyurem PLF, Energy acceleration from Thundurus EX and Colress Machine, damage manipulation through Deoxys, and the ability to attack with any of the above on a whim. However, the issue here is that the things that Plasma has going for it are nearly outweighed by the removal of the gusting ability that a consistent Catcher offered. How useful is this versatility if your opponent forces you to attack who they want you to attack?…
