New Archetypes for Guardians Standard “Vikavolt SUM is a card I was very interested in when it was released, and now that it has a GX counterpart, the concept can only be stronger. The general strategy is to get out all of your Grubbin ASAP and evolve them into Vikavolts. From there, you begin using your multiple methods of Energy acceleration to get your attackers online and ready to start dishing out serious damage. The acceleration provided by Vikavolt SUM is actually incredibly powerful, and is complemented by the acceleration attack on the GX! With a single Vikavolt’s energy acceleration plus an attachment, you can…
Reflection on Preparation and a Misadventure in Gardening from Brazil “Before the International Championship, the Salt Lake City Regional took place and the top tier decks seemed pretty definitive to me; with Tier 1 comprised of Decidueye-GX / Vileplume, Volcanion-EX and Turbo Darkrai decks. Following closely behind would be M Mewtwo-EX, M Rayquaza-EX, M Gardevoir-EX, Gyarados and Lapras-GX. After taking a look at the latest Brazilian Spring Series League Cup Results, no deck stood out as a surprise or something unexpected, but rather it was simply surprising to see M Rayquaza-EX decks and others taking more CP than Turbo Darkrai. Volcanion and M Ray being so successful down there made…
Pablo’s Memphis Recap and First Looks at Expanded Rayquaza and Garbodor/Spread “I went with Zoroark-GX/Lycanroc-GX as I didn’t think much changed at Philadelphia. Obviously Shrine of Punishment decks were still a thing, but I felt this deck had a chance to beat anything with its increased draw power and Lycanroc’s Ability allowing you to effectively play ‘3 Supporters’ each turn. We had Frankfurt Regionals happen in between these events and one particular list caught my eye. The 31st place ZoroRoc list from that event had 4 Lillie and basically no 1-ofs, which I really liked. It was more focused on solidifying your turn 1 and therefore establishing a strong start every…
On Gardevoir’s Guard of the Format, Metagross’ Merit, and the Math Behind Memphis Regionals “I’m pretty sure that your desire to read about Gardevoir is roughly the same as mine is to write about it (or mine to find more pictures of it for articles). In honor of that plight, I’ll keep it quick today: I firmly believe Gardevoir is the best deck in the format. Nearly nothing that’s readily playable in the format consistently beats it, and I find its mirror match usually somewhat enjoyable. Games where one player manages to do absolutely nothing are relatively rare, making it usually a decent affair. Golisopod doesn’t consistently beat it when the players are evenly matched and…
It spends its entire life inside an apple. It hides from its natural enemies, bird Pokémon, by pretending it’s just an apple and nothing more. (Applin)
A Juniors Recap of Dallas Expanded and St. Louis Standard “We spent a lot more time preparing for this event than usual due to the 6 week break between Memphis and Dallas Regionals. This long stretch, without any significant tournaments, meant players could theory and test solely on Expanded decks. I want to share some of my insights on Juniors metagaming, how the Masters meta evolved for Dallas, and how we decided to play Wailord. The Juniors metagame is an odd paradox that is both easy and hard to predict at the same time. An easy trend to see is whatever topped the last Regional in the Masters division will…
Investigating the Results of Limitless Qualifier #3, Plus My Glaceon-GX/Barbaracle Decklist for PokéStats Old Format Tournament #4 and Initial Thoughts on the Players Cup “The idea of a Pokemon-created online tournament series is amazing. I’m glad that organizations like Limitless and PokéStats have done a great job of organizing their own tournaments, but the fact that TPCi is getting involved takes it to another level. There’s a greater possible outreach through pokemon.com than on Twitter and each organization’s website. There are certainly players who didn’t know about Limitless’s tournaments that know about the Players Cup, and even more people who are motivated to play for the prospect of a free trip to an IC. I haven’t reviewed Tournament Rep (mentioned here) or the prospect…
Primal Clash Creations for Florida Regionals and Beyond “Jirachi-EX Discussion Kingdra Mega Aggron Mega Kyogre Emboar/Camerupt Diancie Toolbox Mega Gardevoir Sabelhaus Special Virizion/Genesect Conclusion It seems like everybody has their own opinion on whether or not Jirachi-EX should be played ubiquitously. The discussion never seems to revolve around a certain deck; instead it’s more of a general attitude of whether Jirachi-EX should be run at all. The answer seems to come down to personal preference — some people run it in every deck and others run it in none. In my mind, I feel Jirachi-EX should be played in just about everything right now with the exceptions being decks that don’t run…
Introducing the Nomadic Pokémon, Drifblim BW64 and Absol ROS “First, let’s define the term “nomad”: no·mad ˈnōˌmad/ noun noun: nomad; plural noun: nomads 1. A member of a people having no permanent abode, and who travel from place to place to find fresh pasture for their livestock. 2. A person who does not stay long in the same place; a wanderer. See? You get the idea. Decks that have solidified their place in the metagame have nothing to worry about. Yvetal-EX, M Rayquaza-EX ROS 76, or Primal Groudon-EX aren’t going anywhere. They stay where they are, and other Trainers/Pokemon come to them to create new decks. In a sense,…
Five of them are troopers, and one is the brass. The brass’s orders are absolute. (Falinks)
Recapping the Players Cup Finals and the Future of TEU–DAA “This past weekend we saw the final 16 players duke it out over the past few days. Here’s a link to the full results from those players; I’ll be covering some notable archetypes and ultimately discuss why I think things panned out how they did. Finals VOD Links Preshow: Day 1: Day 2: Lucario & Melmetal-GX/Zacian V dominated the tournament, finishing 1st and 2nd with the same exact list. Kudos to Jack Millar and Matthew Burris for this great accomplishment. I know that when I’ve built decks in the past, it’s been rewarding to succeed and equally rewarding to watch…
Building a Better PTCGO “Codes As far as I’m aware, no other card game does this with their official online program. Magic Online’s booster packs are the same price as physical ones, and there is nothing connecting the two whatsoever. Hearthstone doesn’t have a physical game, and building a competitively collection in a reasonable amount of time is likely going to involve some amount of money. Pokémon circumvents all of this by essentially gifting you a free online pack with the purchase of a real pack, and the same can be said for most of their sealed product (tins, blisters, etc.). Although this is…
Its talent is tap-dancing. It can also manipulate temperatures to create a floor of ice, which this Pokémon can kick up to use as a barrier. (Galarian Mr. Mime)
