Recapping the Toronto Emergents “My brother, Alex, dispensed with even the minimal testing that I did and resolved early in the evening to simply play Groudon. My testing yielded nothing to unseat that idea, and once Night March was tabled by the seemingly imminent rise of Giratina, I was left to return to Groudon myself. The list, though, was a matter of intense debate between Alex and I (and, once he got on board, Sean Foisy). Since our experience in Portland, Alex has been insistent on including a Hex Maniac to shore the Darkrai/Giratina matchup. Personally, I believed the energy denial we included was…
Lurantis/Vileplume and Other Options for Toronto “Before I dive into the meat of my article, I want to comment on a few things from this past weekend in Virginia. I just wanted to play something consistent, as I felt like this format was just about executing your strategy faster and more often than your opponent. Turbo Darkrai seemed to fit the bill nicely, so after seeing Philip Schulz do well in Brazil, I played a bunch of games with his list, made a single change, and went to town. My one change was -1 Dark Energy +1 Parallel City, as I thought the extra copy would…

By no means is Talonflame “needed,” but Greninja, as many of are acutely aware, has some natural inconsistency, and I think Taloneflame is simply the…
Junior/Senior Metagame Analysis for Toronto Regionals “5 Rainbow Road 5 Turbo Darkrai 4 Darkrai/Giratina 4 Raikou/Eelektrik 4 Donphan 3 Yveltal Maxie’s 3 M Rayquaza 2 M Manectric 2 Archie’s Blastoise 2 Trevenant 2 Lurantis/Vileplume 1 Groudon 1 Wailord 1 M Gardevoir 1 Accelgor/Wobbuffet Juniors Top 8 decklists for all events can be found at this link (the 5 Expanded Regionals are Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Jose, St. Louis, and Portland). Overall, there aren’t a lot of trends. Dark decks are easily the favorite, but they still only took 12 of 40 potential slots in Top 8 cuts throughout this year. I wouldn’t want to play Trevenant in Juniors due…
