Discussing the Expanded Format Banned List and Possible Revisions “Let me use this time to say that I’m not a game designer or developer, nor am I an employee of TPCi. All of the opinions expressed in this article are just that, opinions. I definitely spend more time than the average person thinking about this sort of stuff, but I am far from an expert or professional. I can’t speak to the exact motivations of any group or organization that I’m not a part of. I can only use my brain to produce the best thoughts I can, and put them into words for all of you. With that…
The PTCGO vs. Hearthstone Article, Part Two “Before I dive into the article there are a few underlying points I want to discuss and I feel are important to establish. 1. I love online gaming and I feel it is the future as far as gaming goes. There could be a very long discussion involving whether or not this is a good thing, with talking points around human interaction, screen time, etc. The truth is though, the convenience of being in your own home and finding a game whenever you want is amazing. There is no traveling, no scheduling conflicts, and relatively minimal costs. In the last…
Revisiting Mulligans, Benching Out, and First Turn Rules “I’ve spent the most time pondering potential changes to the mulligan rules. The current mulligan rule works like this: If a player has no Basic Pokémon in their opening hand, they reveal their hand to their opponent, shuffle it back into their deck, and draw a new hand (and repeat this process until they do draw a Basic Pokemon). Each time the player is forced to redraw, their opponent has the option to draw an extra card (beyond their original seven). This rule exists to encourage decks to be built with an adequate amount of Basic Pokemon. I feel, however, that it…
A Guide to Cube Drafting in the Pokémon TCG “Cubedrafting.com provides the following definition: Simply, the Cube is a draft format where you get to play designer and developer. You get to choose your metagame. You choose all of the cards in it. You designate powerful strategies, archetypes, and you decide which foils to those strategies you would like to include. What this means, practically, is that a Cube is a set you make out of existing cards and then draft amongst your friends. As the quote above says, the best part about designing a Cube is that you get to choose exactly what goes in it. No longer will you have…
Feedback on Fall Regionals “As you can see from the graph, the majority of players that participated in the survey attended Fort Wayne Regionals, with Philadelphia coming in second, and Houston in third. Additionally, the Masters division overwhelmingly dominated the responses. First, let’s take a look at what everyone thought about the tournament structure. Jason asked players to rate the amount of time they thought was needed for each portion of the tournament. Most players thought that the time they spent in line waiting to register was reasonable, but bordering on being too long. However, when it came to the time spent waiting for…
It’s very curious, but its means of investigating things is to try to punch them with its tentacles. The search for food is what brings it onto land. (Clobbopus)
Building a Better Tournament Structure “After my last article received the feedback that it did, I decided that I would write one in a very similar vein, this time about the actual tournament structure. To clarify, my last article was about how to improve the way that players earn invites to the World Championships, whereas this article will be focused on how to improve each single tournament. Hopefully, there is enough distinction in the topics that this article can spawn a whole new discussion, as I know tournament structure is on every competitive player’s mind basically all the time. This article will be organized by my…
Building a Better Worlds Invite Structure “The following is my detailed plan for altering the invite structure to give players more of what they want, and address all of the issues listed above. Note that I do not have enough data to make a judgement at what CP totals should be changed to, but I will do my best to make suggestions. Overall this is much less about the specifics, such as each event’s CP and Best Finish Limit (BFL), and more about the overall theme of the process of earning an invitation to Worlds. We’ll go ahead and tackle this event by event. League Challenges…
These Pokémon live in herds. Their trunks have incredible grip strength, strong enough to crush giant rocks into powder. (Copperajah)
