My Life as a Competitive Pokémon TCG Player, from 2010 to Now “I got into playing the game during the era of Pokemon SP. At the time I had been playing Yu-Gi-Oh. However, I wasn’t playing it competitively; I’d more so just go to league and play casually. This is mainly due to the fact that I had no idea about competitive play at the time. Out of the blue, I thought about Pokemon and how the cards looked because I had old-school cards from Base Set and Fossil. I figured I’d take a look at some of the recent cards at the time. This is where I came upon cards like…
Mega Gardevoir, Vileplume Variants, Meta Predictions, and Team Tips “Right away, this deck is one of the reasons I’m taking this approach today. Last spring saw me come painstakingly — literally, less than a second — from achieving a Top 8 with Gardevoir in Salt Lake City. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as I tied my way out of contention by the margin of time it took my opponent to move his hand from promoting a new Active to drawing a card, leaving myself with a millisecond-long Turn 0. Nevertheless, the deck was a gutsy meta call then — I knew my chances of beating Night March and Flareon, both significant factors in the format…
Investigating the Inner Workings of Pokémon Teams “1. Does your team have a name? What is the name and how did you come up with it? I’m on two teams actually. One is the more well known Team Hovercats, the origin of which is a trade secret. My main testing team however is named Honor Roll. I’m not sure exactly where the came from on that one, but it’s the brainchild of teammate Kenny Wisdom. 2. How many members does your team have? How many have you added or subtracted this year? How do you recruit new members? Honor Roll has 14 members, 12 of which actively…
The Five Ws and One H of Successful Teams and Playtesters “Worlds 2014 had my team and me preparing… probably less than we should have. After my poor Nationals performance with Yveltal/Darkrai/Sableye/Hammers, I wanted to play an Evolution deck. I was very impressed with Ishaan’s Empoleon/Miltank list and played around with that a bunch in testing. Falling in love with Miltank, I experimented with other Stage 2 decks, including Flygon/Miltank and straight Dusknoir/Miltank, utilizing both Dusknoir BCR and Dusknoir FLF. While all of these decks were pretty good, I didn’t think any of them would be a super strong play for the Grinder. At Nationals I had also seen my good…
